I. NOŢIUNI INTRODUCTIVE

Reguli de folosire a ghidului

Acest ghid se adresează în principal lucrătorului Ministerului Administraţiei şi Internelor, dar nu numai. Ghidul a fost conceput atât pentru cei care au puţine cunoştinţe de limba engleză cât şi pentru cei care au un anumit nivel de pregătire în acest domeniu, mai ales pentru vocabularul de specialitate. Lucrarea este structurată pe capitole pentru o delimitare mai uşoară.

Alfabet, pronunţie, ortografie

Alfabetul englez se compune din 26 de litere:

cinci vocale: a, e, i, o, udouă semivocale: w, y

nouăsprezece consoane: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, x, z

Literele alfabetului luate în parte, se pronunţă astfel:

Pronunţarea cuvintelor este puţin mai dificilă în limba engleză decât în celelalte limbi străine. Consoanele se pronunţă aproape toate la fel ca în limba română. Vocalele se pronunţă uneori diferit.

Nu vom aminti prea multe despre fonetica limbii engleze, deoarece nu am dat şi transcrierea fonetică a expresiilor amintite în această lucrare.

În limba engleză nu există reguli stricte de ortografie. Sunetul nu corespunde întotdeauna literei, de aceea ne ajutăm de transcrieri fonetice unde ne folosim de diferite simboluri cum ar fi: ε, б, з, η, л, , ∂ ⌠ etc.

Vocalele pot fi închise sau deschise, scurte sau lungi: a:, л ; i, i: etc.Accentul are un rol important. La cuvintele formate din două sau trei silabe, una

dintre silabe este accentuată. Unele cuvinte plurisilabice au două accente. Accentul este important deoarece în cuvintele compuse sau derivate el poate duce la schimbarea întregii pronunţii.

La schimbarea valorii gramaticale cuvintele îşi pot schimba ortografia şi pronunţia:

Tocmai datorită faptului că în limba engleză pronunţia prezintă un grad de dificultate mai mare, dicţionarul este un instrument de lucru foarte util şi nu trebuie să lipsească nici unui începător care doreşte să înveţe această limbă străină.
