    I. Read the text and accomplish the post reading tasks.

How much sleep do teenagers need?

Most teens need about 8 to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of

sleep is essential for anyone who wants to do well on a test or play sports without tripping over

their feet. Unfortunately, though, many teens don't get enough sleep.

Until recently, teens were often given a bad rap for staying up late, oversleeping for

school, and falling asleep in class. But recent studies show that adolescent sleep patterns actually

differ from those of adults or kids.

These studies show that during the teen years, the body's circadian rhythm (sort of like an

internal biological clock) is temporarily reset, telling a person to fall asleep later and wake up

later. This change in the circadian rhythm seems to be due to the fact that the brain

hormone melatonin is produced later at night for teens than it is for kids and adults. This can

make it harder for teens to fall asleep early. These changes in the body's circadian rhythm coincide with a time when we're busier

than ever. For most teens, the pressure to do well in school is more intense than when they were

kids, and it's harder to get by without studying hard.

Early start times in some schools may also play a role in this sleep deficit. Teens who fall

asleep after midnight may still have to get up early for school, meaning that they may only

squeeze in 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night. A couple hours of missed sleep a night may not seem

like a big deal, but can create a noticeable sleep deficit over time.

    I. Read the text and accomplish the post reading tasks.

    The Belief in the Stars

When all other advice fails to satisfy, why not turn to the stars? Lots of people believe in

the power of the zodiac to predict events and identify trends in their lives.

What is the zodiac? The zodiac is more commonly known as: star/sun signs, astrology, or

horoscopes. It is a very ancient tradition of looking to the stars for answers about a person or

people based on the placement of the stars at the time of their birth. The theory goes on the

principal that as the stars and planets change alignment; events in the life of individuals born

under certain "signs" also change. Astrology is responsible for the term, "born under a lucky

    star".

One of the most popular uses of astrology's predictive powers is in the area of love and

romance. People like to see if "love is in the stars" for them, or how their "sign" matches with

that of a potential love interest. There are some signs that are said to clash and others that are

said to make beautiful music together.

Another popular reason for "consulting with the stars" is to see if wealth or success is in

ones future. Many people feel that, when all else has failed, the stars can be counted on to give

them the truth. In reality, the stars often tell people what they want to hear - another reason for

the extreme popularity of horoscopes. Whether for true "advice", or just for fun, there is always

    an answer in the stars.

Astrology is a science of time where every moment has a certain quality attached to it.

The personal horoscope is a simplified map of the moments and circumstances in our life. It is in

turn a guide map for our journey through time on the planet known as Earth.

    Test 3

    I. Read the text and accomplish the post reading tasks.Dolly the cloned sheep

Dolly the sheep may have been the world's most famous clone, but she was not the first.

Cloning creates a genetically identical copy of an animal or plant. Many animals - includingfrogs, mice, and cows - had been cloned before Dolly. Plants are often cloned taking a cutting

produces a clone of the original plant. Human identical twins are also clones.

Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, rather than an embryo. Her

birth was announced on February 22, 1997. The sheep was originally code-named "6LL3".The

name "Dolly" came from a suggestion by the stockmen who helped with her birth, in honor of

Dolly Parton, a famous American singer of country music.

This was a major scientific achievement, but also raised ethical concerns. Since 1996,

when Dolly was born, other sheep have been cloned from adult cells, as have mice, rabbits,

horses and donkeys, pigs, goats and cattle. In 2004 a mouse was cloned using a nucleus from an

olfactory neuron, showing that the donor nucleus can come from a tissue of the body that does

    not normally divide.

Animal cloning from an adult cell is obviously much more complex and difficult than

growing a plant from a cutting. So when scientists working at the Roslin Institute in Scotland

produced Dolly, the only lamb born from 277 attempts, it was a major news story around the

world. She mated and produced normal offspring in the normal way, showing that such cloned

animals can reproduce. Dolly produced twin lambs Sally and Rosie, and she gave birth to triplets

    Lucy, Darcy and Cotton.

    Test 4

    I. Read the text and accomplish the post reading tasks. The Amish

In nearly every way, life for Amish people today is the same as it was for their ancestors

300 hundred years ago. They wear the same traditional clothes and live in large family groups. They live in simple wooden houses without mains water and mains electricity. The water they

need is taken from wells and the houses are lit by oil lamps. Amish people have no telephones,

no dishwashers and no TVs. Moreover, they do not drive cars but travel in horse-drawn buggies.

Amish communities have their own schools. Schooling ends after the eighth grade, at the

age of 13 because the Amish do not believe in higher education for their children. They are

taught arithmetic, religious songs and how to earn a living from the land.

Today there are about 100,000 Amish people living in North America. They try to keep

their traditional way of life in the middle of a very different modern American society. The

Amish dont believe that modern technology is evil. But they are afraid that if they allowed itinto their lives, it would destroy many important things. They think that if they had TVs, there

would be less time for conversation. They believe that if they had telephones, they would stop

speaking face-to-face. And they are afraid that if they had tractors, they would become greedy

and want more land than they really need.

Amish people promise to obey their life-rules. If somebody breaks these rules, the rest of

the community will not speak to them until they are sorry for their mistakes.

    I. Read the text and accomplish the post reading tasks.GOOGLE Inc.

Google Inc. is a multinational public cloud computing, Internet search, and advertising

technologies corporation. Google hosts and develops a number of Internet-based services andproducts and generates profit primarily from advertising. The company was founded by Larry

Page and Sergey Brin, often dubbed the "Google Guys". Page and Brin originally nicknamed

their new search engine "BackRub", because the system checked back links to estimate the

importance of a site. Eventually, they changed the name to Google, originating from a

misspelling of the word "googol, which represents the number one followed by one hundred

zeros, that was meant to signify the amount of information the search engine was to handle.

The company's stated mission from the outset was "to organize the world's information

and make it universally accessible and useful" . The company's unofficial slogan coined by

Google engineer Paul Buchheit isDon't be evil. Actually, this site has played an important role

in the democratization of information.Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world, and processes over

one billion search requests. However, the dominant market position of Google's services has led

to criticism of the company over issues including privacy, copyright, and censorship. The

company offers online productivity software, such as its Gmail e-mail software, and social

networking tools ,Google Buzz, Google Books. Since many books are difficult, if not

impossible, to find in bookstores or on library shelves, today we are able to search the full text of

almost 10 million books. Anyway, the Google web search engine is the company's most popular

The word sport is a contracted form of "disport" which means to amuse, to divert one's

self. It includes play, amusement, entertainments or recreation. It is a word which signifies theoutdoor recreations, the athletic work as contrasted with the serious intellectual occupation.

Sports have existed in the past ages and have played an important role in the history of mankind.

If we consider sports from a general point of view and consider their relation to the life of the

ancient people we must inevitably come to the conclusion that sports if well conducted, have

always raised the standard of the nation to a very high degree.

Sports refresh the body, tranquilize and enlighten the mind, and develop moral character.

As a concrete example let us take a student in his college activities. The student who does

exercise is always fresh and vigorous, he seldom gets sick and tired.. Moreover in exercising, the

student gets animated, his blood is purified and consequently his mind becomes more apt to

receive the ideas and thoughts found in his lessons. A weak person seldom can endure the

hardship of school-life, the trouble of memorizing and persevering in his daily lessons. Lastly

when a student is busy with sports during recess time his ideas do not deviate any more to the

path of impurity, to think of such trivial things and the health and strength which he acquires will

help him in overcoming such temptations. Helping young children to develop good eating

patterns and enjoyment from sport and exercise may help them avoid later health problems.

Moreover, since aesthetics is becoming more and more important for all of us, we are

now striving to improve the way we look and our shape, in short: our aesthetic aspect depends a

lot on our daily activities, whether we prefer resting in front of the TV or practicing sports.

Therefore, sports not only shape our personality but our aspect as well, maintaining young andhealthy our body and mind as well.

THE REAL REASON PEOPLE GET THE FLU IN WINTER

For decades we've heard the myth that flu strikes in winter because of the colder weather.

But numerous studies have all debunked that theory.

No, there's another reason flu hits in winter. We already know that our bodies produce a

lot less vitamin D during the winter. So, flu hits right when vitamin D levels begin to decrease.

Science recently discovered that vitamin D stimulates your white blood cells to make a

substance called cathelicidin. Researchers haven't studied this chemical on the flu virus yet, but

they have previously reported that it attacks a wide variety of pathogens. These include fungi,

    viruses, bacteria, and even tuberculosis.

So, it turns out that my suggestions for you to have your vitamin D levels checked this

time of year were right on target. But now, armed with this new information, dont even think it'snecessary to spend the money on a test. Vitamin D is cheap. And it stimulates your body to make

what might be the ultimate antibiotic! One with no toxicity at all and only kills those organisms

invading you (not your own cells).

Arm yourself with the incredible protection of vitamin D. Get sunlight when you can.

Just be sure not to burn. If you are mostly indoors, it is strongly suggested that you add vitamin

D to your daily regimen. Some doctors recommend 5,000 IU per day. They see no downside to

this dose, especially in the winter months!

    ENDANGERED WILDLIFE

If you look up the meaning of the word 'endanger' in the dictionary you will read something

like 'to bring into or expose to danger or peril'.......this is the position that thousands of species of

animals and plants are in today. Extinction is a word associated with endangered.

Life began on Earth more than 3 billion years ago. Species have been disappearing from our

planet throughout this time, long before Homo Sapiens appeared (around one million years ago).

What we can be certain of is that extinction of species was rare before humans established

themselves on the earth. It is really only during the last 300 years that the rate of extinction has

speeded up and this has coincided with the enormous increase in the world's human population

    during this time.

All these people have put such pressure on the lives of other living things that in the last 300

years at least 300 species of vertebrates (animals with backbones), 100 species of invertebrates

(without backbones) and thousands of species of plants have become extinct.

Today around 5 000 species of animals and over 25 000 species of plants are endangered.

Since 1900 more species than ever before have become extinct and scientists think we may even be

losing one species a day at the moment!

Although the rate in increase of the human population is slowing down in some parts of the

World, it is continuing to escalate in others. Allowing for the death rate, about one million more

humans come into the world every week! This increase obviously puts increasing pressure on

    wildlife.

IS HEALTH MORE IMPORTANT THAN WEALTH?

Health and wealth, two words that rhyme so well but often do not occur together. Good

health is clearly preferable but if one does not have good health, then it is better to have some

wealth to ease the burden. Money cannot replace the lack of health, but it goes a long way to

make life easier, more comfortable and reduce a major stressor in most people's lives.

The real question to be answered is not whether health is better than wealth but what is

the true path to happiness. To be healthy but miserable because you are poor is a fairly shallow

way to live your life. With health, your potential is unlimited. Nothing stands in the way of

travelling, working a job, having a family or going back to school. With good health, there is

always a way to make the money to create the life you desire.

To be wealthy but have poor health is like partial compensation, a kind of bad news withgood news. At least, you will have less concern about the cost of healthcare, cost to live a

restricted life and whether there will be money to attend to the further decline of health as you age.

Being wealthy and in good health means you have the world at your feet, nothing should

stand in your way. You can wake up in the morning and carry out any and all of your dreams and

plans. You should experience utter happiness that you have the power to conquer anything,

unless of course, your health fails then the choice will be obvious. You would likely spend every

dollar you have in order to get your health back.

HOW TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME PRODUCTIVELY

Teenagers seem to have a lot of free time, then why does it feel like they have so much less?

It might be because they waste half of all their leisure time watching television. So if you want more

free time, I recommend one thing: turn it off and take a look at some ideas on how to make the most

    out of it.

Make a schedule. For more efficient planning, categorize activities that are related to each

other and do them by category.

Learn new skills. Learning is an investment, whether you spend money on it (like in college)

or not (like reading at home). Read a few books about things you've always wanted to learn.

Nurturing this skill may even lead to bigger things, such as a career move or promotion.

Be active. Sports and exercise may be considered recreational, but they are very important

because they help you be energized so that you may be able to accomplish more activities. Get a gym

membership or try a new bike trail. Meet up with other joggers and run through various paths.

Entertain yourself. Set a day and time for leisure activities such as visiting a museum, seeing

a play or going to a concert. Make sure to limit that activity to one particular day or time. This way,

you will have more time to do your other tasks when you have a set time to take care of your need for

    entertainment.

Do things that you always wanted to do but didn't have time doing before. Think about the

possibility to take a weekend to travel to somewhere that you've never been to before. Be resourceful,

as this characteristic will help you when your money won't.

    INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SCHOOL UNIFORMS

School uniforms have become a hot topic in many areas across different countries.

Educators feel that requiring a school uniform will help students to build self-respect, discipline,

character, community and a sense of pride.

School uniforms were first seen in Europe during the early Modern Era. It was at this

time that children who attended charity schools were required to wear uniforms.

The first official school uniforms appeared during the eighteenth century in the private

schools of Europe. The schools for the wealthy dictated uniforms of different colours to show

disciplinary action. As time progressed through the 18th century, uniforms became an emblem of

the wealthy. School uniforms are still used in public school system throughout the world.

Countries that adopted the European school uniform include Asia, Australia, Caribbean,Chili, Ecuador, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa and the United States.

The school uniform style from Italy and Spain influenced countries like Argentina,

Bolivia, Uruguay and several Middle Eastern countries. The Prussians influenced the type of

    uniforms worn in Japan.

A school uniform apparently also saves students from putting their fashion tastes before

their learning requirements. When they dont have to spend time wondering what to wear and

how to make a fashion statement, they can devote more time to getting an education. Wearing

the same type of dress reduces snobbery and peer pressure in educational institutions.

    DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EAST AND WEST

    DISCOVERED IN PEOPLES BRAIN ACTIVITY

East is East and West is West, and the difference between them is starting to turn up even on

    brain scanners.

New brain research has shown that culture can affect not just language and custom, but how

people experience the world at basic levels what they see when they look at a city street, for

example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square. Western culture make people think of

themselves as highly independent entities. And when looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus on

central objects more than on their surroundings.

In one study, researchers offered people a choice among five pens: four red and one green.

Easterners are likelier to choose a red pen, while Westerners more often choose the green one.

In an experiment measuring how well 8-year-olds could solve puzzles, American children

performed best when solving puzzles they had chosen themselves, while Asian children performed

best when solving puzzles they were told their mothers had chosen for them.

Did Easterners actually see differently, at the level of perception, or just think differently?

Based on what parts of the brain were activated during the tasks, Gabrieli believes everyone sees the

same thing, but may filter it differently.

Culture is not changing how you see the world, but rather how you think and interpret.

Understanding cultural differences in the mind is really important as the world globalizes. There can

be a lot of breakdowns in communication.

    THE BRITISH CLASS SYSTEM

British society is considered to be divided into three main groups: the upper class, the middle

class, and the lower working class. This is known as the class system.

Upper class people own several homes. These people studied at Eton or other public schools.

They work as judges, stockbrokers or company directors. They eat caviar, smoked salmon and drink

champagne. They spend their free time going to opera or ballet. They like playing polo and sports

involving horses. They support the Conservative Party and they spend their holidays in Orient

countries, the Caribbean islands or go cruising.

Middle class people live in semi-detached or detached houses. They studied at grammar-

school and at universities (Oxford, Cambridge). They work as teachers, bank managers or doctors.

They eat healthy food like wholemeal bread or foreign food like avocado, pasta. They like skiing,

sailing, playing tennis, cricket and golf. They spend their holidays in France or Tuscany.

Working class people live in council houses. They finish comprehensive schools and

technical college. They work as shop assistants, miners or factory workers. They eat fish and chips,

bangers and mash, Chinese and Indian food. They like playing football, darts, or bingo and snooker.

They spend their free time watching soap operas or drinking in pubs and usually vote for Labourists

or Conservatives. They take package holidays.

Wealth doesnt mean that you belong to the upper-class society because social class is not

only about money, but also about behaviour and attitudes.

    A POZITIVE LOOK ON FAILURE

Many people allow failure to hold them back, when in reality failure can be a good thing!

Learn how to improve and grow from failure. Whenever you experience failure in life, it touches you

in a deeply emotional way. Although it feels negative at the time, the experience of failure can teach

important life lessons. You learn what does not work, which can actually get you closer to success.

You can learn from your mistakes after you admit making them. Wise people admit their

mistakes easily, putting their pride aside. As Al Franken once said "Mistakes are part of being

    human".

Mistakes lead to success, just like Thomas Addison, inventor of the light bulb tried thousands

and thousands of times to figure out how to make it light up. Though it went on for quite a long time,

and each time he failed, he took it in a positive way. Stating "I have not failed. I've just found

10,000 ways that won't work. He kept on trying and trying, though he failed to reach his target,

which was lighting up the light bulb. Each time he failed, he figured out the ways he went wrong.

Learning from his each and every mistake then led to his lasting success.

Even if you try and fail you will never be the person you were before you started the path.

You have pushed yourself to a new level, moved outside of your comfort zone, and are that much

wiser for having attempted the task. If you constantly avoid pursuing goals and dreams for fear of

failure you will never know what you can do.

Trying and failing is better than never having tried at all.

One birthday riddle ponders: What goes up and never comes down? The answer, of course, is

Your age. Did you know you can also have only one Golden Birthday? From age 1-31, a person

encounters his/her Golden Birthday one time only: On the day in which their age matches the day of

    their birth.

Other fun birthday facts involve people born on a leap day. Every four years, a day is added to

February to make 29 days instead of 28. If youre born on this date, then technically you only have a

birthday once every four years. For example, on your 21st birthday, you could claim to be only 5 years

    old!

Many traditions around the world share a common theme. For example in China, Taiwan, and

Hong Kong noodles are eaten in honour of a persons birthday. The noodles are uncut and are made extra

long to signify a long life. In Ireland and England birthday boys and girls are lifted upside down and

bumped on the head (gently) as many times as they are old with one more bump given for luck. InNew Zealand birthday claps are given, where everyone claps a number of times to match the guest-of-

honours age with one more clap added in anticipation of next year.

The cakes were round and in 18th-century Germany, birthday candles were first placed atop

birthday cakes. There was a belief that candle smoke brought a persons prayers up to the heavens. Thus,

when a candle was blown out, the prayer was sent.

This last sentence in particular highlights how universal yet singular a birthday is. Everyone

has a birthday to call his or her own and each year. As Emily Dickinson once said, We turn not older

with years, but newer every day.

New Year's Eve celebrations go back for centuries and traditions and New Year's Eve facts

are spread across countries and civilizations.

Because of the different calendar system used in ancient Babylon, the actual New Year

started with the New Moon, which was followed by the first day of spring in March. In that time,

New Year's Eve and any celebrations associated with it lasted over 11 days. Every day was a

different type of celebration which usually signified rebirth, a new period of blossoming and a new

    season of crops.

The Roman calendar was changed over and over again each time a new emperor took charge

until it eventually did not match the Sun's patterns. It took an official act of the Roman Senate to

dictate that January 1 would be the beginning of the New Year.

In ancient Babylonia, one common resolution was to return any farm equipment borrowed

from friends or neighbours. It is often thought that the first visitors you see after ringing in the New

Year would bring you good or bad luck. That's why most people celebrating on New Year's Eve

often do so with friends and family in this way assuring themselves with good luck.

Items or food that is ring-shaped is also good luck. This symbolizes "coming full circle",

which is what one year does. The Dutch often eat doughnuts. Other foods that are eaten on New

Year's Eve are cabbage because the leaves represent prosperity. Ham (or a hog) also symbolizes

prosperity. In Asian cultures, rice is a hearty and lucky staple that is eaten around midnight to signify

    the coming year of fortune.
