As clergy of our diocese for nearly twenty years, Fr. Ed Payne has served St. Simon of Lincoln Heights, St. Andrew of Cincinnati, St. Mary's of Waynesville, Grace Church of Pomeroy, St. Peter's of Gallipolis, St. Paul's of Chillicothe and St. Francis of Springboro. Currently, he is retired from parish ministry and is intensely involved in the ministry of serving as a diocesan supply priest. Over the years, he has preached and celebrated Holy Eucharist in twenty-six parishes of our diocese.

Prior to his ordination in the mid 1990s, Fr. Ed Payne lived a life of music, music teaching, and music performance. As an operatic baritone, he made his professional debut at age 17 with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1965 as Baritone Soloist in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Robert Shaw conducting. He sang leading roles in twenty-one opera houses in Italy under the auspices of the Florence Opera House, and in forty-one states for the Boris Goldovsky Grand Opera of NYC. He sang the role of Bernardo in Bernstein's West Side Story with the Chautauqua Opera. He sang leading and featured roles with Opera Columbus for five seasons. He sang the role of Robbins in Gershwin's Porgy & Bess for two seasons with the Metropolitan Opera. He was a New York District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and has performed recitals throughout the United States.
