For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Congratulations to those who received the Laying-on-of Hands and Anointing in Holy Confirmation last Sunday. We pray that they may be frequent at Mass and strong in Christ as they live and grow.

At that time, James and John, the sons of Zeb'edee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

The comments reported in the media recently by Pediatrician Professor Anne St. John regarding childhood obesity in Barbados is a serious cause for concern.

It is a challenge not only for health care professionals and those in education, but for all in society.

This increase may be linked to the fact that many of our children are not as active as before as technological advances have driven our children into activities that are more sedentary, as they interact more with electrical devices.

Such advances in technology may mean that not enough of our children are engaged in games that we once enjoyed both as part of the school day and in our home districts, when we played cricket, football, netball, basketball, ran races, went swimming and such like.

When we listen to physical education teachers and coaches, it seems as though there is this pre-occupation with not being “sweaty”; perhaps not realizing that sweaty is often good.

Children must be given an opportunity to play so as to strengthen their limbs and also that their prowess at sports can be realised.

Coupled with this lack of physical activity is also the intake of fast swiftly prepared meals that have become very popular in Barbados as we adopt more and more the behaviours and lifestyles of cultures far different from ours.

This is perhaps occasioned by international travel and the constant, always on, twenty-four hour televisions channels in which much of the foreign lifestyles are marketed.

The issues mentioned above may not working for the benefit of the health of our nation and has caused a rise in many of our children being overweight. We are constantly reminded of the dangers of this on our general wellbeing as it leads in many instances to chronic non-communicable diseases.

All is not lost however since along with healthcare and education professionals others in our society are seeking to arrest this situation in order that we can have a more healthy nation.

Churches have joined in the battle with the various Health Guilds doing their part to ensure that persons become active and consider more what they consume.

A recent study concluded that with an increase in overweight and obesity especially among children. More attention must be given to:

– Regulating the nutritional content of school feeding

– Re d u c i n g t h e b o m b a r d m e n t o f advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar to children

We have to be advocates for our children to ensure that there is among them an abiding love for God and their bodies and the determination to be healthy and wholesome young people.

NEWS AND CURRENT EVENTS SILVER DOLLAR FOR CHILDREN CHARITY

Today each member of the congregation is being asked to donate $1.00 in support of the Kiwanis Club of Bridgetown’s Silver Dollar Appeal. The funds go to assisting various Charities.

ANNUAL LUNCHEON The Annual Family Luncheon will be held next Sunday, 25th October at Sunbury Great House from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The cost is $60:00 for adults and there are limited children’s tickets at $30:00 each. Buy your tickets in groups of 8 or 10 and enjoy lunch together. Tickets are available from the ushers.

HEALTH GUILD WALK The monthly Health Walk will be held on Saturday, October 24: at 5:30 a.m. Participants will walk through Edgerton, through South District, Lower Burney, Polytechnic, Upton yard, back to the St. David’s Church. Members of the church are encouraged to include some physical activity in there daily lives.

CAKE SALE The Health Guild will have a cake sale on Sunday, 1st November after all the services. Please support this venture.

! HEALTH CORNER:- By Dr. Sophia Marshall There are four (4) number stages of breast cancer. The staging is based on a number of factors including:

➢ The size of the tumour within the breast

➢ The number of lymph nodes affected

➢ Whether the tumour has spread to any other parts of the body

Here is a brief look at stages 1 and 2: STAGE 0 &1 The cancer cells are confined to a very limited area. Stage 1 is divided into 1A and 1B: Stage 1A - Tumour is 2cm or smaller and has not spread outside the breast. Stage 1B -No tumour or tumour is 2cm or smaller and a few cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes close to the breast. STAGE 2 Breast cancer is still in earlier stage but there is evidence that the cancer has begun to grow or spread. Stage 2 is divided into IIA and IIB: Stage IIA - No tumour or a tumour 2cm or smaller in the breast and cancer cells are found in 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or in the lymph nodes near the breastbone. OR The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and there is no cancer in the lymph nodes. Stage IIB - The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and small areas of cancer cells are in the lymph nodes. OR The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and the cancer has spread to 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or to the lymph nodes near the breastbone. OR The tumour is larger than 5cm and has not spread to the lymph nodes.
