Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. At that time, when the Pharisees gathered together to Jesus, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders; and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of

cups and pots and vessels of bronze.)And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?" And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. 'You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men." And he called the people to him again, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him."For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

It certainly has been a marvelous week for us in the St. David’s Church as we observed the Festival of Dedication.

The Rev’d Dr. Monrelle Williams of the the St. Cyprian’s Church, Roxbury, Massachusetts has been our preacher for the week and will bring the festival to a close this evening at the 6:00pm service of Solemn Evensong, Sermon, Procession which will conclude with the singing of the Te Deum.

Dr. Williams chose as his theme “Christians under Construction” and lead us through the various means by which we may be made individually and corporately into a spiritual building; with emphasis naturally on the communitarian aspect of christian spirituality.

Using the text of John 6:66 “After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him.” Dr. Williams drew attention to the fact that so often we begin to follow Jesus and then on realising what discipleship really means we fall away and our membership of church begins to lag until we stop altogether.

We are all very much aware of this reality and so the Festival of Dedication and the various Festivals of the church can be occasions for us to renew our relationship with our Heavenly Father by means of being restored to the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Professor Philip Sheldrake tells us that christian spirituality is always self-implicating so that each of

us are to see ourselves in the light of the topics for the past week.

The topics for the week were:- - Building a life that really matters: An Invitation - Convening a construction crew: Nobody builds

alone - Foundations are critical This evening the final topic of the series is “Let the Living Begin”

There must always be that understating the God invites us to be partners in His mission. We in turn are to invite others who have not yet responded or who are not aware of God’s call.

We do this together as church especially in a context in which some of our young people seem to be making decisions that are particularly destructive.

On our own discipleship can be challenging; Dr. Williams gave the reminder that God calls us away from our comfort zones; but that we need not fear for his presence continues with us throughout our lives.

Please accept the invitation to be with us this evening as the festival comes to a close and furthermore to join us as we seek in faith to follow our Lord wherever he leads

Recently the St. David's Church Youth Group participated in a wonderful tree planting event on the church's grounds. This activity is one that all of us are encouraged to do at home. The trees were donated by the Optimist Club of Barbados.

However just as we would nurture these trees, we must also examine our lifestyle and make adjustments to promote the growth a 'wellness tree'.

In Barbados, the number of persons affected by non-communicable diseases (NCD) is at a worrisome stage. Consider the tree below and determine if it is being 'groomed' by your lifestyle.

! Remember your doctor with his/her experience and intimate knowledge of your medical history, can guide you to better health.

Schedule an appointment with your physician and discuss your desire to improve your health. He or she will be able to advise you on the way forward or refer you to a specialist.

Do not wait until illness occurs, take charge of your life today and alter your lifestyle to promote wellness!
