He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them." So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings

Regardless as to how we view Social Media it remains one of the major w a y s i n w h i c h persons across the world connect on a daily basis.

With more than 1 b i l l i o n u s e r s , Facebook is the w o r l d ’s l a r g e s t soc ia l network . F o u n d e r M a r k Zuckerberg started Facebook in 2004 while he was an u n d e r g r a d u a t e computer science student at Harvard University.

As I prepare this article, there are 497 likes on the Facebook page of the St. David’s Church, Christ Church, Barbados. All it takes is for three persons to go home from Mass and like the page and we would be at 500.

This is a tiny number in comparison to the large number of persons using this particular social network; yet it means that we are able to share news and photos with persons who may be both within and outside of Barbados.

We must be reminded that at the heart of social networking is communication. Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church in a message for the 48th World Communications Day in 2014 tells us that

communication is ultimately a human rather than technological achievement. 

It was in that same message, that the Holy Father stated that “The walls which divide us can be broken down only if we are prepared to listen and learn from one another.  We need to resolve our differences through forms of dialogue which help us grow in understanding and mutual respect.”

We acknowledge those forms of communication in our day to day interaction whether in small and large gatherings with a willingness expressed in the prophecy of Isaiah to come let us reason together. (Isaiah 1:18)

One can certainly agree that the christian church can use the internet as a gift from God to teach and proclaim the kingdom of God to all nations to the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

Here we are not talking about bombarding each other via social media marketing but seeking that true encounter that enables us to share information and enter into authentic dialogue with each other.

Our weekly bulletin is available on at least four social networking sites and the feed back is often interesting as persons seek further information and at times attend Holy Mass because they have seen it mentioned online.

May God almighty be with with us as we use modern means of communication and face to face interaction to be engaged in God-talk and the sacred ministry of the church.

NEWS AND CURRENT EVENTS RECTOR’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY

The Rector will be on holiday from July 15 - August 15, 2015. The Dean Emeritus, The Very Rev’d William Dixon will be Priest-in-Charge during that period.

SUMMER SCHOOL Summer School will be held at the St. David’s Church from Monday August 10 to Friday August 21. Registration forms are available from the ushers.

CONFIRMATION CLASS Confirmation Class will be on recess for the remainder of July and the first week of August. It will resume on Saturday August 8.

ANGLICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE The Anglican Football League 5V5 Football Tournament, to be held on Saturdays in July and August 2015. Games will run from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., at St. Gabriel’s School Grounds. The tournament started yesterday. This year the St. David’s team will be managed by Gary Durant with Edley Malcolm as the coach. Assistant Team Manager is Tyrone Squires

Over the years, Barbados has been dubbed the 'Amputation Capital of the World'. Approximately 300 diabetes-related amputations are performed

annually in Barbados. Therefore ranking the island with one of the highest rates of amputations of the world. According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were 30,500 cases of diabetes in Barbados in 2014. It was estimated that another 8, 500 people have the disease but were undiagnosed.

Many complications can develop as diabetes progresses; one of which is peripheral neuropathy which impairs the diabetic's ability to feel pressure or temperature in their feet. Unfortunately this increases the chance of developing sores on the feet. Furthermore poor circulation can decrease the healing process of such sores, with amputations being the end result, particularly if treatment is delayed. Proper foot care is critical for diabetics. Here are a few tips to help you:

➢ Wash feet daily with warm water

➢ Check feet daily for sores, blisters, redness, or calluses

➢ If skin is dry, use lotions (not between toes)

➢ Smooth calluses and corns gently with a pumice stone

➢ Cut toenails about once per week

➢ Wear shoes and socks-- be sure footwear fits properly

➢ Protect feet from hot and cold

➢ Keep blood flowing to feet: put them up when sitting
