LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT AND READINGS

THE COLLECT O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Numbers Chapter 11 beginning at the 4th verse Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving; and the people of Israel also wept again, and said, "O that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of the LORD blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. Moses said to the LORD, "Why hast thou dealt ill with thy servant? And why have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou dost lay the burden of all this people upon me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I bring them forth, that thou shouldst say to me, `Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries the sucking child, to the land which thou didst swear to give their fathers?' Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep

before me and say, `Give us meat, that we may eat.' I am not able to carry all this people alone, the burden is too heavy for me. If thou wilt deal thus with me, kill me at once, if I find favor in thy sight, that I may not see my wretchedness." And the LORD said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and placed them round about the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did so no more. Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested upon them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, "My lord Moses, forbid them." But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!"

PSALM 19: 7-14 7 The law of the Lord is perfect and

revives the soul; * the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent.

8 The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; * the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, * sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb.

11 By them also is your servant enlightened, * and in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can tell how often he offends? * cleanse me from my secret faults.

13 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins let them not get dominion over me; * then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, * O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of James Chapter 4 beginning at the 7th verse

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you. Do not speak evil against one another, brethren. He that speaks evil against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a

Page 6: Pentecost 18 [2015]

doer of the law but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time, John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us." But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name o f Chr i s t , w i l l by no means l o se h i s reward. "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

On Tuesday of this week (September 29) the Christian Church throughout the world will celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels.

This festival is of particular significance to Barbados since the Cathedral in Bridgetown is dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of St. Michael and the heavenly host.

Francis X. Weiser, S.J., tells us that the name of this Archangel means "who is like unto God?"

In the Old Covenant he is made known to us as the "great prince," the protector of the children of Israel (Dan. 12, 1).

A long tradition identifies St. Michael the Archangel, as the leader who remained faithful to God, and cast Lucifer at God’s command. Revelation 12:7).

Fr. Weiser explains that this Archangel is not only protector of the Christians on earth but also assists the dying, and finally presents them to God at their entrance into Heaven. Thus he is considered to be the patron of the holy souls.

Our sacred liturgy reflects this in the funeral rite as the body is borne from the church with antiphon, (Latin:) In paradisum -

“Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the martyrs receive you, and bring you to the holy city Jerusalem. May choirs of angels receive you and with

!7

Page 8: Pentecost 18 [2015]

Lazarus, once poor, may you have eternal rest.”

Fr Weiser reminds that the St, Michael Feast day, had been celebrated in Rome from the early centuries on September 29. The Synod of Mainz (813) introduced it into all the countries of the Carolingian Empire (An area that covered most of Western Europe) and prescribed its celebration as a public holiday.

Michaelmas, as this time of year is called is known to be a time for new beginnings, traditionally a time for new business dealings, hiring of persons and the start of the academic year in schools, colleges and universities.

We give thanks to God for the wonderful feast of St. Michael and All Angels.

We pray for the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral as well as the Parochial Church Council and members of the Cathedral and Parish Church of St. Michael.

LITURGICAL PRAYER: Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship thee in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER by Dr. Sophia Marshall

WHAT IS METABOLIC SYNDROME?

Have you ever heard of the term 'metabolic syndrome'? This is the term used for a group of metabolic risk factors that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and other health problems. Having one factor puts you at risk of serious disease but this is greater with a combination of factors. An individual must have at least three of following risk factors to be diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome:

(1) Low HDL or 'good' cholesterol i.e. less than 40mg/dL for men and less than 50mg/dL for women. Remember HDL cholesterol acts like a scavenger in the bloodstream and removes LDL or 'bad' cholesterol.

(2) Abdominal obesity or having an 'apple' shape increases the risk of heart disease. Excess fat in the stomach puts you more at risk than excess fat in other areas of the body.

(3) High blood pressure whereby your systolic blood pressure(top number) is 130mmHg or greater or diastolic blood pressure( bottom number) is 85mmHg or greater. If your blood is pushed against your arterial walls at constant elevated pressure, it can damage your heart and lead to plaque build-up.

(4) High triglyceride level; this is a high level of a type of fat in your blood.

(5) High fasting blood sugar

Metabolic Syndrome is a serious condition but it is treatable and your can reduce your risks by eating better, reducing your body fat percentage , keeping physically active and taking prescribed medication to control blood pressure, cholesterol and other symptoms.
