THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 50 beginning at the 4th verse

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by morning he wakens, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of James Chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse

My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man with gold rings and in fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "Have a seat here, please," while you say to the poor man, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are

convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But some one will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. At that time, Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesare'a Philip'pi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Eli'jah; and others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men." And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook : Greetings:

At its meeting if the Barbados Christian Council (BXC) this past week the issue of non-communicable disease (NCDs) came up and engendered much much discussion.

To this end the BXC has issued the following statement:

The Barbados Christian Council (BXC) is cognizant of the NCD epidemic that is affecting the health and wellbeing of the people of Barbados and the threat that these diseases pose to the social and economic development of the country.

The Executive Council discussed this matter at length at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday September 9, 2015

The council has taken note of the results of the recently published Health of the Nation Study, which clearly demonstrates the high level of NCD risk factors such as obesity, low levels of physical activity, binge drinking in men, and low intake of fresh fruit and vegetables among the population.

The Barbados Christian Council pledges its full support for initiatives and programmes aimed at prevention, control and better management of NCDs.

Furthermore, the BXC strongly supports the Bridgetown Declaration signed by representatives of Faith Based Organisations on the 26 February 2014, and will endeavour to encourage its member churches to engage in active education of their congregations by developing and implementing a variety of programmes for educating and training their members in healthy lifestyle practices for

prevention of NCDs, to include health lectures, healthy lifestyle workshops, cooking classes, exercise sessions and health fairs and screening and counselling sessions. In addition, the BXC will encourage all member churches to promote good nutrition by serving healthy meals and snacks at all functions held on their premises.

The BXC also pledges its full support for the National NCD Commission and will seek to work closely with the Commission to promote healthy behaviours in Barbados, using its member congregations as a focus.

The BXC further supports the celebration of Caribbean Wellness Day and will urge member churches to plan appropriate activities to mark this important annual event.

As individuals of course we have to take responsibility for our health care by following the advice of medical and nursing personnel and reduce our intake of salt and sugar.

May God’s grace be with us as we use our spiritual and theological resources to bring about better heath among us and those within our care.

COMPUTER INTRODUCTORY COURSE The Introduction to Computer course, guided by Mrs. Kathy Greenidge, will be held from September 17, 2015 until January 28, 2016, timed 9:00 - 11:15 a.m, with a three week break at Christmastime.

TYRELL MCCOLLIN UPDATE Tyrell McCollin accompanied by his mother Gloria left for Miami, where he will undergo rehabilitative therapy. Tyrell was involved in a serious accident just over a year ago in which his spinal-cord was damaged. Please remember them in your prayers.

HEALTH GUILD MONTHLY WALKOn Saturday, 26th September at 5:30 a.m. the walk starts at St. David’s car park, proceeds along Cox Road, Edey’s Village, left at Frere Pilgrim to Boarded Hall roundabout, left to South District, left at Edgerton and back to St. David. Come and be a part of this healthy exercise..
