We celebrate 10 years since the establishment of the firstprotected house for adults with intellectual disabilities inRomania: DINA! Established in 1999 by the Foundation PentruVoi, with the support of a donor in the Netherlands, DINA wasthe first protected home of our Foundation and the first of thiskind in Romania. The house DINA arose in response to the acute need of theRomanian society to provide community-based residential ser-vices for young people with intellectual disabilities. The Roma-nian state offered only hostel hospital type residential institutions- segregation structures, where quality of life was very low. DINA became a home for six persons with intellectual disabili-ties, out of which four were from institutions; they are the livingproof that people with disabilities, labeled as irrecoverable, canlearn and can live a dignified life within the community.
