II. Read the text. Decide if the sentences are true or false and put a T (true) or an F (false) in theboxes.
Dreams are defined as pictures, sounds and feelings that happen during
sleep. Throughout history people have tried to explain dreams in many ways. The
ancient Greeks believed that by dreaming they came in contact with the gods, and
some civilizations thought they were indications of things that were going tohappen.
There are five stages of sleep. During the first stage we wake up easily, because the sleep is not very deep. Then, during stages two and three, our sleepgets deeper and deeper. After stage four, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep begins. This is when our heart
beat and breathing get faster, the blood pressure goes up and the brain starts to work. REM is known as thedream stage, as most dreaming takes place in this phase.
Dreaming is an activity of the brain. The brain produces electrical waves that scientists can
measure. We know today that we dream when the brainwaves are the fastest. Most of the time people
cannot remember their dreams, so they think they did not dream that night. That is not true. However, we
only remember dreams that are repeated.
Even blind people dream: they see things that they experienced before they lost their sight or, if theywere born blind, they dream the sound, smell and taste of things.
