Modern society requires sae and continuouselectrical supply. The purpose o all electricalpower systems is to generate, transer and dist-ribute electrical energy at the desired availabi-lity, quality and cost, and with minimal risk topeople and the environment.

    Maintenance is a decisive actor

The most common reason or a substation orparts o a substation being removed rom ser-vice is maintenance o individual devices. Toattain optimal operational availability, it is thusnecessary that shut-downs or maintenanceat a substation can be planned and that alter-native connections to important loads can bearranged. The substation must also be desig-ned so that problems in one part do not aectother parts o the substation. Problems that

require direct disconnection o substation partscause unplanned interruptions o the electricalsupply.

    Operational availability a key issue

    Low ailure rate

ABBs switchgear apparatuses have very lowailure rates when the specifed maintenance isperormed. The most important and mechani-cally most advanced substation apparatus thecircuit breaker has undergone signifcant

improvements over the years. The two biggestreasons or this are that SF

    6replaced compres-

sed air and oil as interrupting medium, andthat operating mechanism technology has beenrefned.

New technical solutions based on many

    years o experience

ABB Power Technologies in Ludvika, Sweden,is the only manuacturer in the world with allvital apparatuses or substations in its productassortment. Development o ratings and dimen-sions can thereore be coordinated, whichsimplifes the construction o complete substa-tions.

ABB has extensive experience in buildingsubstations or high voltage systems, and sub-station design is urther developed at the samerate as or the included devices.

In this brochure, we will be presenting ourcompact withdrawable and disconnecting cir-cuit breakers and their advantages.

In traditional substation solutions, the circuitbreaker, due to its mechanical complexity, was previously the device that required themost maintenance. Product development orABBs circuit breakers over the past 50 yearshas brought improved technical perormance.

Moreover, the need or maintenance hasdecreased to the point that the breakers arenow nearly maintenance-ree.

In conventional substations, disconnectorsare still installed at each side o the circuitbreaker so that it can be disconnected duringmaintenance. Because the contacts o con-ventional disconnectors are not shielded romthe eects o the surrounding environment, itis these devices that require the most mainte-nance.

With our innovative combined units, we

have created the capability to design sub-stations without conventional disconnectors, which improves operational availability.

    Increased availability

Maintenance-intensive disconnectors eventhose connected directly to a busbar are eli-minated, which reduces the need to take thebusbar out o service. This permits simplerbusbar solutions.

    With our modern SF6

circuit breakers as abase, we now oer two alternatives that pro-

vide opportunities to both simpliy substationsand save space.

    Substations without conventional disconnectors

One is the withdrawable circuit breaker WCB, which is designed to be a part o a com-plete type-tested substation bay. The circuitbreaker is trolley-mounted and can be movedbetween the connected and disconnected posi-tions using a motorized operating mechanism.

The fxed primary contacts are maintenance-ree.

The other alternative is the disconnectingcircuit breaker DCB, where the breakersown contacts, which are protected in the SF

    6

breaking chamber, also provide the disconnec-ting unction. The DCB thus replaces the con-ventional combination o circuit breaker andadjacent disconnectors. A reliable interlockingsystem in combination with a motorized groun-ding switch and clear indication o the contactposition provide complete personal saety.

    New opportunities

With our withdrawable and disconnecting cir-cuit breakers, new opportunities are providedor thinking along new lines when designingcompact substations with simpler layouts orsingle or double busbars, or other confgura-tions. Fewer oundations, low material require-ments and small substation suraces mean lessimpact on the environment. Our preabricatedmodules require less labor, both during instal-lation, and during service and maintenance.

The WCB (Withdrawable Circuit Breaker) orthe 72.5 300 kV range consists o a trolley-mounted standard circuit breaker o our well-known LTB or HPL types. For the breakersopening and closing operation, our well-repu-ted, motorized, spring operating mechanisms

are used the BLK or BLG. Connection to theline and busbar is perormed with maintenan-ce-ree contacts. Movement rom the connectedposition to the disconnected position is accom-plished with a motor unit that is interlockedwhen the circuit breaker is closed.

Two confgurations o withdrawable circuitbreakers can be supplied, high-built or air-insulated outdoor substations and low-built orindoor substations.

Equipment included in a circuit breaker bay

The complete circuit breaker bay, includingbusbars, is type-tested in accordance with inter-

    national standards.

The high voltage equipment includes allnecessary unctions or a circuit breaker bayand consists o:

Combined, the disconnecting circuit breaker(DCB) is basically a standard type LTB or HPLcircuit breaker that is also type-tested in accor-dance with disconnector standards. The circuitbreaker contacts in the open position are thusopen disconnector contacts as well. Combined

replaces the conventional combination o cir-cuit breaker and separate disconnectors. Itpermits a simpler and more compact substationlayout, with increased availability due to redu-ced maintenance requirements.

The disconnecting circuit breaker is equip-ped with a visible motor-operated groundingswitch with high mechanical strength and mini-mal maintenance requirements.

Combined can be single- or three-poleoperated with a BLK or BLG spring operatingmechanism, or with Motor Drive, the new

digitally controlled operating mechanism. Up to245 kV, the circuit breakers have one breakingchamber per phase, and in the 362420 kVrange, two breaking chambers per phase.

Ratings or current and voltage comply withthose or the LTB and HPL circuit breakers. Thedisconnecting circuit breakers ulfll the requi-rements o the IEC and ANSI standards or cir-cuit breakers and disconnectors, and the new

Combined - disconnecting circuit breaker or 72.5 - 420 kV

IEC standard that specifcally addresses testingo disconnecting circuit breakers. Service lieor the circuit breaker/disconnector contactsis verifed through type testing with 10,000mechanical operations.

Saety and interlockingThe visible grounding shows that the discon-nected part o the substation is not energized. To prevent accidental switching o the circuitbreaker and the grounding switch, there is anadvanced logical interlocking system that canbe remotely controlled and locally padlocked.Reliable mechanically interlinked indicationsshow the positions o the circuit breaker andthe interlocking system.

Also contributing to saety are the circuitbreakers composite insulators, which besides

good dielectric properties, withstand mechani-cal stresses and external damage.

    Compact substations

Thanks to conventional disconnectors beingeliminated and the need or maintenance mini-mized, the opportunity is provided or simpliy-ing substation layouts and reducing installation, service and maintenance costs.

    Solutions with compact switchgear modules

The space requirement or the conventional solutions is about 2000 m2, while the simplifed solu-tions require only hal or less.

    The SF6circuit breakers long maintenance

interval in comparison with conventional dis-connectors, and the new apparatus with inte-grated disconnecting unction, enable substa-tion solutions to be simplifed.

Double busbar systems, which were previouslyused to saeguard operation during circuitbreaker and disconnector maintenance, can inmost cases now be replaced by single busbarswith unchanged or improved operational avai-lability.
