THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Letter to the Corinthians Chapter 5 beginning at the 14th verse. The love of Christ controls us, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once regarded Christ from a human point of view, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat,

so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?" And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?"

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

“A Taste of Summer”

Our weekend festival “A Taste of Summer” will be held this coming weekend. It will be held under the patronage of Senator, Sir Trevor Carmichael, QC.

What eventually emerged as “A Taste of Summer” had its genesis in a discussion among two persons to have a mid summer concert.

Eventually the notion of floral decorations were added and then the decision to add a Tea refreshment and then the idea of wine and cheese.

While retaining the initial concert decision, it was determined that organ music would add character to the event, since we as Anglican have a strong musical tradition.

It was determined that the festival would be an excellent way of celebrating 175 years of ministry in this pastoral and liturgical ministry in this part of God’s vineyard.

This two day event will see the coming together of various crafts and skills. It will essentially be a flower festival.

As persons come into the church to view the floral decorations throughout the entire church they will be treated to background music on the organ by some of our local organists.

Here within the architecture of the church building we celebrate the very depth and breath of God

almighty himself symbolized in the beauty of aesthetics which is communicated in the beauty of creation and creativity.

Professor Kevin Irwin tells us in his book Context and Text: Method in Liturgical Theology,

“ t h a t t h i s s e l f c o m m u n i c a t i o n i s accomplished through aesthetically pleasing and beautiful l iturgical arts fits the anthropological foundation for and inherent framework of Christian worship.

We fulfill that deep longing to to give thanks for the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of each hour, for every tree and flower. (Hymn 711 CPWI Hymnal)

In other words as we participate in the festival of flowers and music we are able to catch a glimpse of the God who in Christ would stop to notice the lilies of the field (Matthew 6:28).

In our appreciation for this beauty we combine craftsman’s art and music's measure in a way that cannot be soured by human ego or materialism; but that takes us to realms on high.

May we enjoy the promise of the wonderful upcoming weekend and may God’s grace rest with us as we welcome visitors to our St. David’s Church.
