TRADITIONAL GAMES
2
Coordonator,
Prof. Şacu Dorina

PORTUGAL - GAME OF THE ROOSTER
In Portugal it is also known as” The game of the old guy and the old lady".
Rules
• The board consists of three rows and three columns.
• Two players have to choose a symbol, usually a circle or a X.
• The players one at the time play with the chosen symbol on a gap that is empty.
• The objective is to achieve three circles or three Xs on a line, either horizontally,
vertically or diagonally, and if it is possible, to prevent the opponent to win on the next
move. When a player wins, it is normal to delete the three symbols.
The perfect play
If two players always play their best, the game always ends in tie. The logic of the game
is very simple, so it is not difficult to finish or memorize all possibilities to make the best
move - although the total number of possibilities is very large, most of them is equal, and
that the rules are simple. Therefore, it is very common that the game is a draw. A player
can easily play a great game following the rules, in order of priority:
In general, the best is to play in the middle and then on the sides because there is a bigger
opportunity to block or to win.
1. To Win: If you have two pieces in a row, get the third.
2. To block: If the opponent has two pieces in line, get the third to block it.
3. Triangle: Create an opportunity where you can win in two ways.
4. Block the opponent's Triangle.

asemenea.

SPAIN - CINQUILLO
In this game, you need to have special Spanish game cards or you can use any kind of
normal game cards. Spanish cards have four suits: “bastos, oros, espadas, copas” (clubs,
gold, spade , glass). It suit has 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, jack, horse, king.
The game can be played with four to six players. Today, five students, that is five players,
play the game.
Firstly, after shuffle, the cards are delivered to the players one by one.
Each player has the same number of cards. So, if you have five players, each player gets
eight cards.
The player next to the one who has delivered the cards is the first one to play.
The first player is supposed to put a “5” card of any kind on the table, of course, if he has
one. If no, he just says “pass” and it's the
next one's turn, who is expected to come
up with a “5” again.
10
When there is a “5” on the table, the next player has to put a “4” or a “6” of the same suit
or a “5” of another suit of cards.
A player cannot pass if he has a corresponding card for any of the sets on the table. That
is, no lies!
The aim of the game, which is clear till now, is to finish all of your cards before all other
players.
It is smart to keep the best cards, which, in this
case, are commonly “5” cards, to prevent other players to finish up their cards before you.
This game can also be played with small amounts of bets for adult players.
11
CINQUILLO
Fiecare
jucator are acelasi numar de carti. Deci, daca aveti 5 jucatori, fiecare va avea cate 8 carti.

FINLAND - SOLITAIR
Insert sticks to the every hole, expect to the middle one. Now you have to try to take
away all of the sticks expect one. Then you do like this: Let the stick jump over the next
stick to the empty hole. Then you have to take away the stick which is stayed between the
sticks. Go on as far as you can. It’s hard even really hard to take all the sticks away from
the board game expect the last one, but there are ways to do that.
Milla is showing you how to play this board game.
15
Every Comenius partner has got this game or is going to get it, while the game is one part
of our Cultural Bag.
16
SOLITAIR

ROMANIA - Ţ.O.M.A.P.A.N.T.
The name of this game comes from the initials of all the sections, but its meaning is lost
in translation. Each letter means a category: T = ţară = country
O = oraş = city
M = munte = mountain
A = apă = water (meaning rivers, lakes, seas, oceans)
P = plantă = plant
A = animal = animal
N = nume = name
18
T = total = total
So, in English, the name of the game would be: CCMWPANT. It doesn’t make sense, so
we decided to keep the name in Romanian. Of course you can play this game in your own
languages, so the name can change also.
To play this game you need:
- unlimited number of players
- sheets of paper (one for each player)
- pens or pencils
You draw tables with 8 columns on the sheets of paper and in each column you write the
name of a category. You can make as many rows as you want (depends on how many
games you want to play.)
Countries Cities Mountains Waters Plants Animals Names Total
Cuba Constanta Carpathian Celtic
Sea
Carnation Cat Clara
When you start playing the game you have to choose a letter. So, one of the players starts
saying the alphabet silently and another one stops him/her. The last letter said by the
player is the letter that has to be used to find words for all the sections, as in the example
I gave you.
The first one who finishes all the sections says “stop” and the game finishes. You start
counting the points like this:
- if you didn’t write anything – 0 points
- 10 points for each column you filled in
- 5 points – if you have the same word as another player
So, if you filled in all the columns and you don’t have words in common with other
players, the total should be 70 points.
19
Then, you start another game, by saying the alphabet again.
The winner is the player who has the most points.
Note: when children play this game, they draw the papers by hand, they don’t do it at the
computer. They just draw with a pencil 7 vertical lines and a horizontal one and then
write the names of the sections.
TURKEY - YÜZÜK OYUNU
Meaning Ring Game in English. It is very easy to play and also enjoyable. You can play
it with unlimited number of players. You need to get small cups, a ring and a tray, make
two groups, get cups equal to the number of players of a group.
If you have 5 players in each group you need 5 cups.
The first thing you do is to decide the starter team.
After that, the group which starts the game come together and hides the ring.
Then, they put the tray before the other group and they try to guess where the ring is.
20
If they find the ring earlier, they get more points.
-first shot is12 points
-2nd is 9
-3rd is 6
-4th is 3 points.
The group that gets more points is the winner of the game.
We hope you enjoy playing this game.
JOCUL INELULUI

FINLAND - TERVAPATA
Tervapata is a traditional finnish playground game for four or more players. You can play
this game inside or outside where ever you have enough room. The more players the
more space needed. The play field is circular, diameter from 5 to 10 meters, with half
circle for every player on the circumference and one smaller circle called “Tervapata” in
the center of the ring.
When the game starts one of the players is so called “Kiertäjä” and he starts to walk or
run around the rink behind other players, who are standing in their positions on the
circumfence. “Kiertäjä” has got a stick or a cone in his hand and he is trying to drop it to
the ground behind other players backs so that they don´t notice it. The players on the
circumfence are not allowed to look behind themselves until “Kiertäjä” has passed them
by.
23
When “Kiertäjä” drops the stick behind somebody he then tries to go around the circle
and reach the free place where he dropped the stick before the player now with a stick
reach the place running opposite direction.
If a player looks behind too early must he go to “Tervapata” , the place in the center.
Player must also go to “Tervapata” if he doesn´t notice the stick behind him until the
“Kiertäjä” has gone around the circle. Player gets free from “Tervapata” after someone
else has to come there. Other players can free the one in “Tervapata” by running around
him three times. Of course there is a possibility to loose your own place while you are
trying to free the one in the center.
TERVAPATA
El are un băţ
mare.
PORTUGAL - THE SACK RACE
The sack race is a competitive game in which participants place both of their legs inside a
sack and hop from a starting point toward a finish line. The first person to reach the finish
line is the winner of the race.
25

The goal is to prisoner all the players of the other team.
You are a prisoner when you were hit by the ball sent by a player from the other team.
When you are prisoner, you’re going on the other camp prison with the ball. To be
delivered, you must touch one player of the opposing team.
If the ball leaves the playground, it’s called into play in the prison area where the ball is
out.If you touch several players at once with the ball, they are all prisoners.
You can make passes in your area or to your team mates who are in prison.
When you have the ball, you mustn’t walk.

SPAIN - TANGUILLA
Castilian traditional children's game that still practice on a regular basis or as a tradition in
various populations. . It is played at least since the twelfth century, although you may have
Roman origins. In addition to Castilla, its different variants are played in Galicia and
Aragon.
It is a game of marksmanship or "launching precision" and as the town receives different
denominations: manga, tarusa, Tuta, pillar, Tanganyika Canutillo etc. Tanguillo The name is
commonly used in the village of Palazuelos and generally in the hills north of the province of
Guadalajara and surrounding areas of Segovia and Soria
Nowadays in the school we play a adaptation of this game.
This game can be played with as many players as you wish.
You need sticks and circles to be able to play the game. The number of the sticks, which are
called “tanguilla”, on the ground depends on the number of the players you have. The more
players the more sticks.
Each team consisting of two players, or more, gathers in front of its stick; or there can be one
stick for all teams, depending on how you wish it to be.
The players should stand about 2 meters before their sticks to make a shot. This length is
changeable for the age levels.
Each player has three shots with three circles. The player in turn has to pass a circle through
the stick to get one point.
30
And for the points, a chart is drawn on the ground by a chalk, or just on a piece of paper, with
the initial letters of the players' names and three blanks for each player, and, also, a blank for
each player's total point.
After all teams, with their players, finish shooting the circles, the points are counted to find
out the winners of each team and the winner of all teams.
31
TANGUILLA
In zilele noastre noi jucam o adaptare a acestui joc.
2 m in fata batului inainte sa arunce cercul. Distanta poate fi
reglata in functie de nivelul varstei.
Fiecare jucator are 3 incercari cu 3 cercuri.

maxim 3 ori.

This is a game that is played by the all children on the streets, in the schoolyard, everywhere.

- unlimited number of players
- a ball
You mark on the ground 2 concentric circles, one with the diameter of 3-4 m, the other
one 6-7 m.
Split the players in 2 equal teams: a team stays inside the little circle: they are „the
ducks”, and the other team stays around the big circle: they are „the hunters”.
„The hunters” team has the ball and they pass it to each other. After 3 or 4 passes they
start throwing the ball at the ducks, trying to hit them. They may move around the big circle,
but must not step inside it. „The ducks” have to move quickly inside their circle and try not
to be hit.
A hit duck is considered a point for „the hunters”. After a few minutes the teams can
change: „the ducks” become „the hunters”. The points are counted and the game continues.
The winning team is the one with the biggest number of points.
