Laudatio

Profesorului DAVID TURNOCK ,

de la Universitatea din Leicester (Marea Britanie)

Mult stimate Domnule Profesor Turnock, Doamnelor şi Domnilor membri ai Senatului, Doamnelor, Domnişoarelor şi Domnilor,

Subsemnaţii, membri ai comisiei de întocmire a Laudatio,

prezintă, prin acest document, în faţa Senatului Universităţii

„Alexandru Ioan Cuza”din Iaşi, o remarcabilă personalitate a geografiei

umane contemporane din Marea Britanie, pe profesorul doctor David

Turnock, prieten vechi şi de nădejde al geografilor români şi al

poporului nostru, geograful cu cele mai numeroase şi trainice realizări

dintre toţi specialiştii contemporani, din alte state, în geografia umană

a României.

Profesorul David Turnock a trecut, nu demult, pragul celor

şapte decenii de viaţă, fiind născut la 19 august 1938. A urmat, în

Marea Britanie, calea clasică a ascensiunii ştiinţifico-didactice,

devenind, în mod strălucit, mai întâi absolvent al liceului Wigan

(1956), laureat în discipline umaniste (B. A.), apoi licenţiat în discipline

umaniste (M. A.) şi, în final, după o muncă de cercetare care a durat

şase ani (1958 - 1964) - doctor în ştiinţe (Ph. D.), la renumita

Universitate din Cambridge.

Numit, în anul susţinerii doctoratului, asistent la universitatea

scoţiană din Aberdeen, a înaintat pe post de lector, la aceeaşi

Universitate, iar din 1969 şi-a desfăşurat activitatea la Departamentul

de Geografie al Universităţii engleze din Leicester, unde a devenit

conferenţiar, apoi profesor şi - din anul 2003 – profesor emerit.

Prin munca sa asiduă şi prin pasiunea dovedită pentru

cercetarea de teren şi de bibliotecă, profesorul David Turnock s-a

format ca un distins om de ştiinţă, de talie internaţională, devenind

personalitatea europeană cea mai prestigioasă în cercetarea uman-

geografică a statelor Europei de Est şi, în mod deosebit, a României,

ţară de care s-a simţit cel mai puternic ataşat, încă din anul 1967,

când a vizitat-o pentru prima oară, împreună cu un grup de geografi

din Scoţia, condus de Domnia Sa.

Începând de atunci, an de an, uneori şi de mai multe ori anual,

pe baza unor programe de cercetare promovate sub egida Societăţii

Geografice Regale, a Institutului Geografilor Britanici, a Academiei

Britanice, a Consiliului Britanic şi a Consiliului Cercetării în Ştiinţele

Sociale, ca şi pe baza unor contracte de colaborare bilaterală cu

Institutul de Geografie al Academiei Române, precum şi cu

universităţile din Timişoara, Cluj şi Iaşi, a efectuat cercetări

amănunţite şi sistematice în toate regiunile ţării noastre. Profesorul

David Turnock a asigurat benevol, în anii 1972 – 1978, verificarea

finală a versiunii engleze a textelor explicative şi a legendelor hărţilor

din Atlasul Geografic Naţional al României, ajungându-se astfel la o

deplină acurateţe terminologico-lingvistică. Din 1997, profesorul

Turnock face parte şi din comitetul de redacţie al periodicului

Academiei Române Revue Roumaine de Géographie, în care publică, în

mod curent, ca şi în alte reviste geografice din România.

Concomitent, profesorul David Turnock a facilitat primirea în

centre universitare importante din Marea Britanie a unor tineri

geografi români şi a deschis noi punţi de colaborare ştiinţifică în

cadrul programului Erasmus-Socrates al Uniunii Europene. Din 1994

a asigurat stagii de documentare şi vizite de studii pentru tinerii

cercetători români, în cadrul programelor de schimburi academice

bilaterale.

Profesorul Turnock a publicat şi numeroase articole ştiinţifice

în colaborare cu geografii români, mai ales tineri, de la Institutul de

Geografie al Academiei Române şi din diverse centre universitare. În

1993 a iniţiat şi coordonat publicarea unui volum special din revista

geografică internaţională Geojournal, cu titlul Geography in the new

Romania („Geografia în noua Românie”), prilejuind cunoaşterea

pentru prima dată în străinătate a contribuţiilor ştiinţifice ale unor

tineri cercetători români.

Ca factor de orientare a interesului specialiştilor din Marea

Britanie spre problemele României, a iniţiat colocviile româno-

britanice, în colaborare cu geografii români, asigurând publicarea în

Marea Britanie a lucrărilor prezentate. Concomitent, a luat parte activ

la desfăşurarea unor colocvii româno-britanice de istorie – de exemplu,

la colocviul de la Iaşi, unde a expus rezultatele cercetării asupra unor

documente inedite din arhiva inginerului britanic Charles Hartley,

care, în secolul al XIX-lea, a elaborat, pentru Comisia Europeană a

Dunării, proiectul lucrărilor de realizare a Canalului Sulina şi a

condus aceste lucrări. Preocupările ştiinţifice ale profesorului David

Turnock au stârnit interesul şi au atras elogiile unor istorici români de

prim ordin, membri ai Academiei Române, ca Paul Cernovodeanu,

Cornelia Bodea, Dinu C. Giurescu şi Alexandru Zub.

David Turnock a desfăşurat şi o remarcabilă activitate

didactică, începută la Cambridge, în paralel cu pregătirea doctoratului,

continuată la Aberdeen şi finalizată la Leicester, unde lucrează fără

întrerupere de nu mai puţin de 40 de ani. Deosebit de intensă a fost

însă, în paralel, activitatea de publicare a cercetărilor proprii,

palmaresul său ştiinţific referitor la România numărând 43 de volume

tipărite (inclusiv ediţiile revăzute şi volumele colective) şi 197 de

articole, fără a lua în calcul şi lucrările publicate în mai multe

variante sau sub formă de capitole în opere colective.

Volumele, elaborate de Dl. David Turnock, ca autor unic sau în

colaborare cu alte eminente personalităţi britanice, ca - de exemplu -

regretatul profesor Frank Carter, de la University College, sunt sinteze

documentate de geografie istorică, de geografie a mediului, de geografie

umană (în special rurală) şi de geografie economică, dedicate, în

primul rând, ansamblului Europei de Est şi, în mod particular,

României. Subliniem valoarea unor volume de referinţă, frecvent citate

în literatura ştiinţifică vest-europeană, aşa cum sunt O geografie

economică a României (1974, reeditată în 1979), Geografia umană a

Carpaţilor Româneşti (1980), Europa de Est - o geografie istorică (1989,

reeditată în 1991), Problemele mediului în Europa de Est (publicată

împreună cu Frank Carter, la Londra, în 1993, reeditată în 1996),

Economia est-europeană în contextul comunismului şi al tranziţiei

(1997), Constituirea Europei de Est – de la începuturi până în 1815

(Londra, 1998), Naţiunile Europei de Est (în colaborare cu Frank

Carter, 1999), Economia Europei Central-Estice, 1815 – 1989 – stadii

ale transformării într-o regiune periferică (Londra şi New York, 2006),

Privatizarea în Europa de Est rurală : procesul de restituire şi de

restructurare (apărută la Cheltenham) etc.

Dintre temele de studiu predilecte, materializate şi în articolele

referitoare la România, remarcăm studiul ecoturismului şi al

agroturismului în Carpaţi, cercetarea particularităţilor geografice ale

transporturilor, cu precădere ale celui feroviar, problema conservării

spaţiilor rurale şi aceea a amenajării aşezărilor umane ; autorului i se

datoreşte, de altfel, şi aplicarea la spaţiul carpatic a noţiunii de

ecoregiune. Demnă de subliniat este preocuparea pentru geografia

teoretică, materializată în actualizarea anuală a unei „Geografii

Filosofice Concise”.

Bogata operă geografică a profesorului David Turnock,

referitoare la România, se distinge şi prin spiritul de inventivitate al

autorului, care reuşeşte totdeauna să găsească puncte de vedere şi

subiecte noi, de mare interes, mai ales din perspectiva cititorului

apusean. Metodologia folosită, îmbinând orientarea clasică cu cea

modernă, se caracterizează printr-o deosebită minuţiozitate, prin

respectul absolut faţă de detaliu şi prin adecvarea la subiectele

abordate. Nu pe ultimul plan stau şi perfecta obiectivitate ştiinţifică a

profesorului Turnock, manifestată atât în anii de dinainte cât şi în cei

de după 1989, maturitatea şi echilibrul cu care sunt judecate

fenomenele umane, la adăpost de orice fel de presiune politică, ceea ce

asigură, suntem convinşi, perenitatea operei, şi audienţa largă a

acesteia.

Dintre regiunile geografice ale României cercetate cu un

maximum de insistenţă de autor, revin în memoria cititorului Carpaţii

Meridionali, Munţii Banatului, extremităţile sudică şi sud-vestică ale

Munţilor Flişului, din Carpaţii Orientali, Subcarpaţii Vrancei şi

Subcarpaţii Munteniei Centrale.

Ataşat sufleteşte de mult timp, prin cercetările efectuate cu

baza la staţiunea de cercetări geografice de la Pătârlagele, de regiunea

profund rurală a bazinului subcarpatic şi montan al Buzăului,

profesorul David Turnock, a sprijinit efectiv, după 1989, comunitatea

rurală din zonă, în special spitalul şi şcolile, prin distribuirea de

ajutoare umanitare, atât de necesare (îmbrăcăminte, medicamente,

rechizite şcolare), transportate personal şi repartizate cu ajutorul

parohiilor ortodoxe. În anul 1990 David Turnock a răspuns şi la apelul

comunităţii ştiinţifice româneşti, colectând şi donând cărţi valoroase

de specialitate pentru refacerea fondului Bibliotecii Centrale

Universitare din Bucureşti, parţial distrus în timpul luptelor din

decembrie 1989.

Toate lucrările strălucitului reprezentant al şcolii britanice de

geografie umană sunt însoţite de o amplă bibliografie românească de

specialitate, care, astfel, este introdusă în circuitul ştiinţific mondial,

prin intermediul limbii de cea mai largă circulaţie internaţională.

Încă dinainte de reorientarea politică a României, din 1989, Dl.

David Turnock a depus şi eforturi pentru a face cunoscute pe plan

extern o sumă de nume de primă mărime ale geografiei româneşti,

astfel publicând în revista britanică Geographers, revistă a Comisiei de

Istorie a Gândirii Geografice a Uniunii Geografice Internaţionale, în

continuarea iniţiativei lansate de academicianul Vintilă Mihăilescu, în

acelaşi periodic, la mijlocul deceniului al optulea al veacului trecut, o

amplă privire bio-bibliografică asupra unor deschizători de drumuri, ca

Romulus Vuia, Ion Conea şi însuşi Vintilă Mihăilescu.

Pentru meritele sale ştiinţifice şi pentru relaţiile pe care le-a

dezvoltat între Marea Britanie şi ţările est-europene, profesorul dr.

David Turnock a fost distins cu premiul Edward Heath al Societăţii

Regale Britanice de Geografie, pe anul 1989, cu titlul de Doctor

Honoris Causa al Universităţii de Vest din Timişoara, în anul 2000, cu

medalia de bronz a Societăţii Române de Geografie (1993), diploma

Institutului de Geografie al Academiei Române (1994) şi medaliile de

merit ale Universităţii din Leicester pe anii 1991, 1994 şi 1999.

În concluzie, considerăm că întreaga activitate a geografului

britanic David Turnock PhD. exprimă seriozitatea şi profunzimea sa

ştiinţifică, o mare corectitudine îmbinată cu o neobişnuită putere de

muncă, toate încununate de un sincer şi dezinteresat ataşament

pentru oamenii de ştiinţă din România şi faţă de întregul popor român.

Opinia noastră sinceră este că Domnia Sa întruneşte toate criteriile

ştiinţifice şi morale pentru a merita titlul de doctor honoris causa al

Universităţii „Alexandru Ioan Cuza”din Iaşi şi rugăm, cu respect,

senatul Universităţii să i-l confere în mod solemn.
