INTRODUCERE
albine.

ASPECTE GENERALE CU PRIVIRE LA SITUA łIA APICULTURII PE
PLAN MONDIAL ŞI NAłIONAL
1.1CONSIDERATII GENERALE

polen /familie/an.
real de 32-35kg polen/familie/an.
16
M.J. 1993, Sălăjan Gh. 1998, Mărghitaş L. A.2002, Lazăr Şt., 2002, Bura M. 2003).

polen/an” (Mărghitaş L.A., 2002.
- alimentaŃie energetică;
- alimentaŃie proteică;

CAPITOLUL 5
PERSPECTIVELE DEZVOLT ĂRII APICULTURII – ORIENT ĂRI NOI ÎN
CREŞTEREA CANTIT ĂłII, CALIT ĂłII ŞI VALORIFICAREA
PRODUCłIILOR APICOLE
5.1 IMPORTANłA ŞI MODUL DE VALORIFICARE A PRODUCłIILOR
APICOLE

- lungimea trompei cuprinsă între 6,02 mm – 6,64 mm;
- lungimea aripii anterioare 9,40 – 9,60 mm;
- indicele cubital 2,12 – 3,70 (clase);
- indicele tarsian 54,97 – 58,56 (%).
22
naturală periodică a mătcii).
Seria I de experienŃe

variantă în parte;
28
variante în parte (V2- polen, V3- lucernă, V4- drojdie de bere, V5- cătină);
vederea invertirii mai rapide şi uşoare a zahărului);

în hrana suplimentară;
variantă care a consumat amestec de zahăr cu sare de Tazlău în proporŃie de 0,5%;

CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL ASPECTS REGARDING THE SITUATION OF BEEKEEPI NG
IN ROUMANIA AND IN THE WORLD
1.1 GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Human historical proof precesily states that beekeeping was developed to a high
degree with Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians and Chinese and the archeological
findings revealed vestiges, clay pots, demonstrating that these creatures had beeen at high
esteem during the Pharaohs times.
Closer to our time, numberless generations—both literate and illiterate –dedicated
fondness and knowledge to understanding these remarkable insects.
1.2. BEEKEEPING WORLDWIDE
For the time being, all over the world, research and production in apiculture is
being coordinated by APIMONDIA , reuniting national beekeepers’ associations of far
and near. .
With the Congress organized in Roumania-- in 1965-- , Professor, VECESLAV
HARNAJ engineer, Phd was elected Predident of APIMONDIA , personality highly
esteemed as scientist and professional who has led the destinies of Roumanian
beekeeping and of the World Federation of Beekeeping, until 1985.
1.3. APICULTURE IN ROUMANIA
Apiculture on Roumanian teritorry has been and still is representing one traditional
occupation.
In so far as Roumanian beeproduct yields are concerned, as shown by the following
table : in 1989 a total of 12,124 t of honey was reached, i.e., an average of 8,5 kg/family,
and, beginning in 1995, honey production kept to the same level (cca. 10,000 t. per
annum), and in 2000-2001 it encountered an obvious increase, even doubling in 2004.

FOOD DEMANDS AND NATURAL SOURCES FOR HONEYBEES
2.1. DEMANDS IN NUTRITIVE SUBSTANCES FOR BEES
Naturally and within optimal environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, air
currents, meliferous basis, etc.), demands in nutritive substances adequate for honeybees
are mainly provided by the nectar and pollen in the entomophilous plans.
However, during some strenuous respites (lack of natural harvest, prolonged
rainfall or draught , etc.), when bees are unable to fend for themselves, such food
demands must be met by the keeper by means of various supplementary ways of
providing.
45
2.1.1. Energy demands

2.1.2. Protein demands
Due to intense metabolism and activity, literature has it that a family of bees of
medium capacity needs sizeable quantities of protein :
- for feeding the queen and raising the brood .............................3350 gr.protein
- for feeding thegrowth of the bees hatched .................................. 650 gr. protein
- for the activity of secretory glands ......................................... 360 gr. protein
- for physiological reserves (the adipose body) .................................450 gr. protein
Total ............................................................................ 4810 gr. protein
When the pollen contains a mean value of 25% there results 20 kilos of pollen
required per family/per annum. The assimilation of protein in the pollen is of about 60%
and thus the true consumption is of 32-35 kg.pollen/family/annum.
46
2.1.3. Lipid demands
In nature, lipids are granted in the organic reserve along proteins, via the pollen
the bees take in, either in pure state or, as maiden wax.
Literature has it that an important aspect regarding the need for lipids of the honey
bee is connected to the necessity that during preparation for wintering this be made up of
the adipose body (fat body, i.e.).
2.1.4. Demands for mineral elements
It is suffice to assert that when of the sugar syrup usual in beekeeping to stimulate
the development of bee family about 17 trace elements out of 30 are missing, contained –
asit is-in the floral honey, it is obvious that this will lead to belated development in the
bee family and, implicitly, to shallow yields. In nature, bees will procure the necessary
elements from the flower pollen and water sources they use all along their active season.
2.1.5. Vitamin demands CerinŃele de vitamine
Research regarding vitamin requirements of honeybees, have revealed that these
cannot be missed from the vitality of individuals beginning as early as their larval stage,
and the leading role is detained by those in the B „+”- complex.
2.1.6. Water requirements
Water requirements of a honeybee family in the spring are between 50-200 ml ,and
gradually increase to 300-380ml/day in the summer, sometimes even to
750ml/day/family.
2.2. THE MELIFEROUS SOURCE AND THE MAIN NATURAL FOOD
SOURCES FOR HONEYBEES
The life, evolution and development of bee families depend on the meliferous
plants as well as on the way of production with these of the nectar release and pollen.
Roumania has at its disposal a diversified meliferous source capable of ensuring –within
natural conditions—numbers of bees and apicultural productions much higher than those
obtained for the time being.
47
2.2.2. Main natural food resources
Literature speaks about well over1000 meliferous plant species known; of these,
barely 200 (some opinionate 300) are useful to beekeeping (Parvu, C., 2000).
2.2.2.1. The nectar and the honey
Nectar is a purely plant secretion released by the nectar glands of the meliferous
plants.
Chemically, the nectar collected by the worker bees differs with the floral source;
however, it contains 73% and 90% water; between 9% and 60 % sugary substances and,
between 1% and 2% various plant juices.
- Honey is a sugary substance produced by the worker bees by collecting floral-
and extrafloral nectar or of another juice collected from plants—nectar or juice that is
transformed by means of a diastase called invertin contained in their hypopharyngeal
gland.
- Floral honey is produced by bees, beginning in spring up to late autumn, from the
nectar of flowers coming from entomophilous plants.
- Manna honey also known as « dew honey » or « forest honey ». This sort of
honey is collected and processed by the bees, either from the sweet juice ousted by
certain insects (aphids) which feed on plant sap or, from certain plant secretions.
2.2.2.2. The pollen and the maiden wax
- The pollen is the male sexual cell of flowers and it shows itself as fine grains of
10 and 200 Ц Numerous observations and research works done on the pollen collected
by bees reveal that collecting bees have nothing to do with the floral purity of the pollen,
but the fulfillment of a combination-- as complex as possible—of grains that will
constitute the natural protein food adequate to the entire family of bees has (Standifer
L.N. 1966, Vorst E.V. 1980, Chambers S. 1990, Szolderits M.J. 1993, Sălăjan Gh. 1998,
Mărghitaş L. A.2002, Bura M. 2003).
- Maiden/virgin wax , also called “bee’s bread”, makes up for a protein food
indispensable to families of bee, mostly during the winter.
48
CHAPTER 3
THE SPECIFIC OF FEEDING AND YIELD WITH HONEYBEES
3.1. BIOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES ; EVOLUTION CYCLE AND FEEDING
RELATIONSHIPS IN THE BEE FAMILY
Without having any definite boundary, in the evolution of bee families, in the
beekeeping practice and research, starting in the autumn, one can distinguish six phases
(Papadopol A., 1994):
- the phase of growth with the hibernating bees ( August-October)
- the phase of winter respite (November-February)
- the phase of replacing the bees through with hibernation (February-
April)
- the phase of population growth (April-June)
- the phase of natural reproduction—swarming (May-July)
- the phase of rendering valuable of production harvests (May-July).
Food exchange—trophallaxys takes place among bees. An substantial part is
represented by the queen substance.
.
.3.3 PHYSIOLOGY OF DIGESTION AND FOOD UTILIZATION
With honeybees, when nectar, honey and water are fairly easily assimilated in the
organism, directly in the haemolymph, pollen is submitted to some complex alterations
and, of longer duration, mainly.
3.5. PHYSIOLOGY OF BEE PRODUCTS
Bee products are classed into main ones—honey and wax, and byproducts—pollen,
maiden wax, propolis/bee glue, royal jelly/propolis, bee venom.
49
CHAPTER 4
NATIONAL- AND WORLDWIDE RESULTS CONCERNING THE
UTILIZATION OF FOOD SUPPLEMENTS IN THE ALIMENTATION AND
NUTRITION OF BEE FAMILIES
Literature is pointing to the fact that “a bee family needs 90-120 kg/annum of
good quality honey; of this, 18-20 kg. for winter” and “20-30 kg.of pollen/annum”
(Mărghitaş L.A. 2002 and Bura M. 2003).
On utilizing nutrtitional supplements according to the source as main component and the
aim in view, feeding can be :
- energy feeding ;
- protein feeding ;
- minerals feeding ;
- complex feeding (energy-protein-mineral)
Nowadays, no professional person doubts the utility of substituting honey with
sugar, or the pollen with other plant/animal-protein sources when it comes to providing
protein-energy food for bee families.
The minimal natural food reserve in nest—minimal limit is 6 kg honey and 1.5 kg
pollen/family.
4.2. THA MAIN SOURCES OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS IN BEE FEEDING
When bees fail to fend for themselves in so far as enough food is concerned,
beekeepers will look for other sources of food –either from reserves created to fit such a
purpose, or from sources outside the hive (sugar, pollen replacement—soy/trefoil flour,
powder milk, a.s.o.).
50
CHAPTER 5
DEVELOPMENTAL EXPECTATIONS IN BEEKEEPING – NEW
DIRECTIONS IN INCREASING QUANTITY, QUALITY AND MARK ETING OF
BEE PRODUCES
5.1 THE IMPORTANCE OF BEE PRODUCES AND WAYS OF SELLING
THEM
The scientific importance of bees results both from organising their life and from
the their biological mechanisms, outstanding from the point of view of self-regulating
and adaptation ability, as well as from their value and from the complex content of bee
produces.
The biological importance is due to the fact that bees carry out pollination --
through their flight from flower to flower-- of around 80% of the entomophilous plants.
Thus, the part played by bees is inestimable to mankind and nature. Bees also represent a
natural sensing element regarding the environment, by dispalying an outstanding
ecological importance.
On the other hand, due to the high rendering valuable of bee produces obtained
from bee families, their economic importance goes up as well. Bee products possess
remarkable value, both from alimentary point-of-view as well as from research and
health-care point-of-view.
5.2. DIRECTING APIARIAN EXPLOITATIONS TOWARDS ECOLOGICAL
BEEKEEPING
The Programme of Agricultural Development includes –for beekeeping—
important aims to reach, mostly the orientation towards an ecological beekeeping in view
of obtaining clean natural products.
51
PART TWO
PERSONAL RESEARCH
CHAPTER 6
ORGANIZATIONAL PROBLEMS; NEEDED MATERIALS AND
METHODS OF WORK
6.1. MATERIALS AND METHODS OF WORK UTILIZED
Research works on the impact of certain nutritional sources added in the main feed
and utilized in feeding the bee families were carried out based on organising certain
successions of observations and specific experiences within conditions of stationary bee
keeping, from 2004 to 2007. Within the bioapicultural unit sheltering the research works,
there was put up a number of five experimental variants, of eight bee families each. The
unit is privately owned, having at its disposal a number of 82 families of bees and located
on the southern edge of the town of Huedin, close to the Huedin-Bals motorway, in the
County of Cluj; it was established in 1974. Maintenance of the bee families was located
in orizontal hives in 20 frames equipped with storages for harvesting. The measurements
of the frames were of 435/300 mm.,and those of storages, 210/150 mm.
6.1.1. Biological material
In so far as the biological material is concerned, well, it was represented by bee
families appertaining to the breed of Apis mellifera carpatica, Fotti – ecotype of
Transylvania, hill variety. Bees are characterized by a moderate swarming instinct and are
tranquil during nest inspection, proving industriousness in securing the food reserves.
Following thorough studies carried out on bee samples collected from the bees in the
bioapicultural area of Huedin, there has been found that from morphometrical poin-of-
view bees are characterized by the following measurements:
- length of proboscis/probe measures between 6,02 mm – 6,64 mm;
- length of front wing 9,40 – 9,60 mm;
- cubital index 2,12 – 3,70 (classes);
- tarsian index 54,97 – 58,56 (%).
It is characterized by serene supersedure of queen. They are less inclined to
52
pilfering. Generally, they display a small degree of swarming (moderate swarming
instinct). On collecting conditions one can notice honeycomb-building activity, too.
Filling of cells with honey is mainly “dry”, and sometimes, intercessing (mixed). On
high-intensity collecting, they display accentuated propensity to clogging the nest with
honey. Such a biological peculiarity stands witness to the exceptional productivity within
favourable conditions of collecting. Tendency to propolisation is of medium level.
The bee is winter-hardy as the surrounding environment encounters harsh winter
conditions. It also is adapeted to certain bacterial diseases, i.e., ascopherosis and
nosemosis.Studies and research works carried out on the local bee populations inhabiting
the area of Huedin, reveal that foreign breeds of bees were not introduced, as beekeepers
have always been aware of the genetic value of the bees they own, also cherishing the
idea of keeping the purity and biological capacity of them.
6.1.2. Other materials
Hives are made up of cases of planks of resinous wood, equipped with two
openings serving as bee entrance and lid with lateral grooves for airing.
Food sources utilized are :
Series I of experiments
- polyfloral honey - sugar - polyfloral-pollen flour - alfalfa meal - yeast - sea-buckthorn meal - medicinal-plant tea
Series II of experiments
- sugar
- kitchen salt
- Tazlău salt
The polyfloral honey utilized in experiments was obtained from biological units in
apiaries others than those taken under study. For the 2004 experiments, the polyfloral
honey was obtained from the summer harvest of the year prior to the 2004 experiments,
i.e., 2003 and, for the 2005 experiments, honey obtained in 2004. The honey tasted sweet
and was golden-yellowish in colour, uncrystallized, it displayed a pleasant look and
odour characteristic of hay-field; thus, it well fitted-- from organoleptic poin-of-view--
53
into the class of polyfloral honey.
In so far as the utilized apicultural inventory is concerned, it consisted of : control
apicultural scales; boxes for the transportaion of frames; forks and tray for emptying the
honeycomb; standard centrifugal extractor from frames; solar melting device for
reconditioning of the wax in frames; Netz frame, utilized to determine the areas with
brood in the nest frames, as well as other inventory items specific to works in the bee
gardens (beekeepr’s smoker; masks; overall; protection gloves, etc).
6.1.3. Experimental methods
The research method –the method of batches within control variant (V1M) and four
experimental variants (V2,V3,V4,V5).
The method of multiplying by stoloning—in order to obtain the formation of artificial
swarms
The method of extracting through centrifugation—in order to obtain honey meant for
marketing
The method of utilizing the building frame—in order to obtain production of marketing
wax
Chemical analyses : :
- the Kjeldahl method to determine gross- protein content -the Soxhlet method to determine gross- lipids content
- the Hannenberg method to determine gross- cellulose content
- the method of calcination to determine gross- ash content
-the method of paper chromatography to determine the content in aminocids .
To carry out certain quantitative- and qualitative measurements, apart from
observations and recording of certain data/periods, the Netz frame has also been utilized
with some parameters such as : numbers of breeds; numbers of bees ; also, scales of
several sizes (1; 5; 10; 100kg) for weighing samples: materials; frames; food sources; bee
families included. . The results obtained were processed statistically, expressed according
to circumstances, in relative- and absolute values, by employing the Student T Test.
54
6.1.4. Geoclimatic conditions and local flora
The climatic values recorded and then corroborated with the phenology of
meliferous plants within the area where the bee garden was placed revealed a belated
evolution of the natural meliferous source, fact that justified intervention with energy-
protein supplements.

6.2. REASEARCH ORGANIZING
The 40 families of bees in the bee garden were grouped in five uniform variants
considering their development, of 8 families per variant.
6.2.1 Objectives of the personal investigations
Beekeepers should know the demands in nutrition of bees and intervene efficiently
whenever the environmental conditions are improper.
The apiarist practice lays down the knowledge of causes leading to inadequate
development of the bee families and finding of methods meant to removing the
defficiencies in the way of obtaining higher yields. Among causes is lack of pollen,
sometimes the main cause.
Investigations concerning the identification of new sources are far from being
over, and the studies on alimentation and nutrition of the bee families are mainly
focusing on new sources of energy-protein food, in strict accordance with the needs of
competitive physiological needs, in view of obtaining increased apiary productions.
Additional feeding of various protein sources to replace pollen during hard times is
the aim and main objective of the research work carried out.
The investigations regarding “The impact of nutritional supplements on bee
yields” were carried out in two series, i.e., the 1st one, experiment I including experiment
1 and 2 in 2004-2005 and, series II, including experiment 3 and 4, in 2006-2007.
The aims pursued were :
- feeding of four protein sources in series I, and of two mineral sources in in
nutritive supplements in series II. This was followed by determining the
variation in the consumption of additional food;
- establishing of the way of influencing bee families as to their development
and yields obtained;
- classing the additional food sources, both those of protein- and mineral
nature;
measuring certain parameters regarding the development of bee families, for each
variant along experiments ,and of areas containing broods, numbers of bees and
man-made swarms obtained;
56
- measuring certain parameters regarding productions of bee families for each
variant during experiments, production of honey and wax destined for sale ,
respectively.

RESEARCH RESULTS ON THE IMPACT OF CERTAIN SOURCES OF
NUTRITIVE SUPPLEMENTS FED ADDITIONALLY IN THE MAIN FOOD, ON
THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTIONS OF BEE FAMILIES
(SERIES I OF EXPERIMENTS )
7.1. BRIEF CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING THE ORGANISATION AND UNFOLDING OF RESEARCH IN SERIES I OF EXPERIMENTS
Feeding mixtures of energy- protein supplements was practiced all over the active
season during the mentioned years , by having been administered 1000 g of each.
In so far as the preparation manner of the additional food is concerned, it has been
carried out in the following way: weighing out quantities from each source of
supplements necessary to each variant;
-Dry supplement sources, respectively the sugar as source of protein food specific
to each variant (V2 – pollen; V3 – alfalfa; V4 – yeast; V5 –sea-buckthorn), were mixed in 5
58
vessels of the same capacity (10 l).
- after mixing and a healthy homogenization, liquefied honey was added; then,
there followed an energetic kneading operation which continued in gradually adding
lukewarm plant tea in which lemon salt had previously been dissolved to obtain a faster
and easier inverting of the sugar);
- the mixture homogenized very well when a wooden spoon was utilized, until a
paste of dough consistency was obtained, which did not stick to the hand.
The paste thus obtained, for each variant, was portioned in quantities of 1 kilo each
(table 10) and packed up in plastic bags in the shape of cakes, then placed over the back
of the frames, above the nests of the bee families, with the sheet punched downwards in
such a way as the bees have access to the content.

7.3.4 Partial conclusions
Both in experiemnt 1- 2004 and in experiment 2- 2005 the consumption of
additional food recorded-- during spring season—progressive monthly increase reaching
the top in May, followed by decrease to bottom during main natural collecting (May-
July). Beginning in August, up to end of September, food consumption records
significant increase followed again by decrease in October as the bees are physiologically
preparing for the cold season.
The analysis of development parameters shows that in the two experiments in
series 1 in 2004-2005 the areas taken by capped broods, the numbers of bees and swarms
recorded signficant increase as to the control variants, as displayed in the previous tables
shown.
The parameters regarding the apiary productions also record additional growths,
both with honey and wax for trade, such as between 1.5 kg. up to 4.80 kg. honey for sale
with experimental variants V2, V3, V4, V5; with experiment 1 i.e., 1.30kg. up to 6.0 kg.
honey for sale, with the experimental variants in experiment 2, as measured against the
control variant V1 M.
The general ranking , respectively the place taken by the experimental variant, is
the same with both experiments, i.e., : 1st place variant 2 ( pollyfloral pollen ), followed
by variant 4 (yeast), and 5 (sea-buckthorn flour), on places II and III.
One can notice that both with experiments in 2004 and with those in 2005, the
productions of wax and honey for trade obtained from bee families in the experimental
variants consuming energy-protein supplements—different from control variant
consuming only energy supplement—record production growths of higher value, or
smaller, according to the biological worth and degree of digestibility of the protein
consumed.
There are also to be remarked the beneficial effect and influence upon these
productive indices, beside the natural source, of the pollyfloral pollen, the pollyfloral
pollen of a new source—sea-buckthorne flour—which, on first-time administration under
this form, is a promissing natural source of truly positive effects on bee families.

(SERIES II OF EXPERIMENTS )
8.1. BRIEF CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING THE ORGANISATION AND
UNFOLDING OF RESEARCH IN SERIES II OF EXPERIMENTS
Following the first series of experiments on the influence of energy-protein
nutritive supplements on bees’ production during 2004 and 2005, during 2006 and 2007
the personal research continued with experiments on the influence of mineral
supplements on the development and and yields of meliferous bee families.
8.1.1. Results regarding the content in gross nutritive substances of raw
materials utilized as supplements in the series II of experiments
An important part in the feeding of meliferous bees is detained by mineral
supplements, too. In so far as Na in the cooking salt is concerned, this mineral is to be
found in proportion of 39.32%, and in the fodder salts of Tazlau, in proportion of
15.10%. .

8.3.4. Partial conclusions
- The consumption of energy-mineral supplements as mixtures of cooking salt and
sugar powder (V2, V3) and Tazlau salts (V4, V5) with the experiments in 2006 and 2007,
was various; better results having been recorded with variant 1 (M*) and with the
experimental one with Tazlau salts utilized in proportion of 0.5% (V4). The proportion
over O.5% of salts in the food supplements influences the consumption negatively.
It has been found that in the usual food for bees, the requirements in sodium
and potassium are not met, fact which imposes the administration of special supplements
of these elements.
- Regarding both the food consumption, area of brood and that of numbers of bees,
and respectively of the swarming instinct, the best results were recorded with the variant
of 0.5g Tazlau salt which granted for the 0.18% sodium chloride and 0.04% K in the
additional food;
- Leaning on these results, there ensues that the best norm for cooking salt in the
additional food for bees is that of 0.18%, and for potassium that of 0.04%; by applying
these one can obtain the best outcome regarding the appetite, growth and development of
brood, numbers of bees and swarms;
- As far as the production yields of honey and wax destined for the market are
concerned, the best performances were recorded with the biological units in the
experimental variant 4 which consumed mixture of sugar and Tazlau salt in proportion of
0.5%;
- The best influence on developing the production yields of the bee families goes
to the supplement of 0.5% Tazlau salts , granting both the sodium and potassium
necessity , thus completing-- at the same time-- the lack of other missing mineral
elements in the natural food; however, these are by far cheaper as measured against
cooking salt.

OVERALL CONCLUSIONS
The results obtained regarding the effects of energy-protein and mineral food
supplements fed to the experimental variants as to their impact on the development and
production yields obtained with bee families along the experiments in 2004 to 2007,
allow for drawing of the following conclusions :
1. Bees prefer mainly the collection of pollyfloral nectar and pollen vis-a-vis other
sources of food; however, when periods unfavourable to natural collecting come up, they
consume food additionally administered from diverse sources, such as those utilized in
our research works : alfalfa meal, yeast, sea-buckthorne meal.
2. The sources of protein food fed additionally during experiments were consumed
in varying quantities and rank in decreasing order of preferences, as well as by the results
obtained, in the following order: pollen, yeast, sea-buckthorne, alfalfa. .
3. We have utilized a new source of food in the nutrition of bees; this, although
has a lower protein level than the pollyfloral pollen, owing to its high content in free
aminoacids and complex chemical composition in biosimulating elements, it has
positively influenced both development and production yields obtained. Besides the
classical sources, we recommend the utilization of sea-buckthorne meal in bees’ food ,
mainly in scanty periods of natural collecting.
4. Depending on the biological worth of the protein sources in the experiments in
series I (2004 - 2005), there was obtained substantial efficiency, both by indices of
development and production . With experiment 2 in 2005, as measured against the
control variant, the families in the experimental variant recorded extras between 28.5 dm 2 and 113.75 dm 2 areas with capped brood, respectively 100g up to 550g more quantities
of bees. Also, there was a plus of 1.30kg up to 6.40 kg. of trade honey and between 12.0g
up to 36.85g trade wax, in comparison with the control variant.
5. With regard to the experiments in series II, we found that the natural food
resources did not satisfy the optimal demands in sodium and potassium of bees; thus, to
obtain higher performances in the development and production yields obtained with
honey- and wax productions in accord with the biological potential of the bees, it is
71
imperious that the defficit be completed with these elements, by mineral supplements,
mainly when the bees cannot carry out the natural pollen collection.
6. The salt norms encountered with in literature, of 0.01 and 2% ,considered as
optimal in mineral supplements for bees are not of scientific nature, as they were
randomly used and transmitted from one generation to another and being in excess in the
organism ; for the elimination into the metabolism, a certain sum of energy is spent and
substracted from produce formation and the consequence is lower production yields as
measured against the productive potential of the bee families.
7 Sodium and potassium deficit in the usual bee food found with the present
research work , can be best covered by incorporating nutritive supplements in proportion
of 0.5% Tazlau salts which, in accordance with the chemical composition of this source,
contribute with 0.18% sodium chloride and 0.04% potassium, or by incorporating 0.18%
sodium chloride or cooking salt, and 0.04% potassium.
SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The utilization of pollyfloral pollen collected by bees , due to its complex value
and abundance in nutritive principles of therapeutical purposes, obliges beekeepers to
find new sources of protein food for their bee families, corresponding from composition
point-of-view and the biological demands of bees.
The research work on utilizing sea-buckthorne meal in the additional nutrition of
bees can substitute the necessary protein food, mainly in unsavoury periods.
It is necessary to be reconsidered --by all beekeepers—the pollen production
destined for marketing and its higher rendering valuable in the pharmaceutical industry,
having in view that pollen is considered to be the so-called functional food for the
organism.
We have found that the best method to ensure the necessary nutritive substances
through additional nutrition for bee families is that of mixture of the energy- protein-
mineral supplements fed as cakes (pastes). Such a method possesses twofold advantage:
bees are not disturbed daily as in the administration of syrups, thus stress is eliminated
and, on the other hand, pilfering is also avoided. Consequently, we recommend this
method of administration to all beekeepers.
