A p r o p i e r e a ş i i n t e r f e r a r e a c e l o r d o u ă p l a n u r i p o l i t i c o - r e l i g i o a s e , p r i n r e n u n ţ a r e a l a n ă z u i n ţ e l e ş i a s p i r a ţ i i l e l o c a l e ş i s t a b i l i r e a u n o r p r i o r i t ă ţ i n a ţ i o n a l - t r a n s i î -v ă n e n e , e s t e g r ă b i t ă d e r u p e r e a l e g ă t u r i l o r c u naţiunea ilirică, c a r e l a C o n g r e s u l d e l a T i m i ş o a r a d i n a u g u s t 1790 s e p r o n u n ţ ă p e n t r u f o r m a r e a u n e i v o i e v o d i n e p r o p r i i , d i n c a r e r o m â n i i o r t o d o c ş i e r a u e x c l u ş i 2 . O p ţ i u n e a c o m u n i t ă ţ i i i l i r i c e p e n t r u o f o r m u l ă p o l i t i c o - a d m i n i s t r a t i v ă d i s t i n c t ă , î n c o n d i ţ i i l e c r i s t a l i z ă r i i l a s î r b i a u n u i a ş a - n u m i t naţionalism politic5, ş i v o t a r e a d e c ă t r e d i e t a m a g h i a r ă a l e g i l o r p r i n c a r e p o p u l a ţ i a o r t o d o x ă d i n U n g a r i a p r i m e a a c e l e a ş i d r e p t u r i c u „ l o c u i t o r i i d e l e g e g r e c e a s c ă " , a d u s l a d e z a g r e g a r e a r a p i d ă a b l o c u l u i „ p r i v i l e g i i l o r i l i r i c e , l a a d ă p o s t u l c ă r o r a a r e z i s t a t a t î t a t i m p o r t o d o x i a r o m â n o - s î r b e a s c ă " . î n a c e s t e c o n d i ţ i i , „ b i s e r i c a d o b î n d e ş t e u n c a r a c t e r n a ţ i o n a l , c e e a c e v a d e t e r m i n a o r e e x a m i n a r e a p o z i ţ i e i ş i a c t i v i t ă ţ i i d e s f ă ş u r a t e . O s o l i d a r i t a t e e t n i c ă c a r e î ş i a s o c i a z ă v a l o r i l e s p i r i t u l u i p o p u l a r , o c o n ş t i i n ţ ă c u l t u r a l ă ş i i s t o r i c ă c a r e v a f o r m a p e s t e s c u r t t i m p c o n ş t i i n ţ a n a ţ i o n a l ă , se s u p r a p u n p e s t e u n i t a t e a o r t o d o x ă , c o n t r i b u i n d l a d e z a g r e g a r e a e i " 4 .

1. Istoriografia şi istoria problemei. A c t u l p o l i t l c o - r e l i g i o s d e l a 179S a s u s c i t a t d e s t u l d e p u ţ i n a t e n ţ i a i s t o r i o g r a f i e i t r a d i ţ i o n a l e s a u m o d e r n e 5 . l o a n L u p a ş a l i m i t a t î n t r e a g a p r o b l e m a t i c ă l a a s p e c t u l r e l i g i o s , c o n s i d e r î n d că î n c e r c a r e a d e r e u n i r e a b i s e r i c i l o r „ s e p r e z i n t ă c a o u r m a r e f i r e a s c ă a e x p e r i e n ţ e l o r d u r e r o a s e d i n t r e c u t ş i a î n v ă ţ ă m i n t e l o r a t î t d e s c u m p p l ă t i t e " 8 . Ş t e f a n L u p ş a c o n s i d e r ă că „ p r o i e c t u l d e r e u n i r e a . . . b i s e r i c i l o r r o m â n e ş t i d i n T r a n s i l v a n i a s e n ă s c u i a a d u n a r e a c o n v o c a t ă d e g u v e r n p e n t r u d i s c u t a r e a p o s i b i l i t ă ţ i l o r d e a s c ă p a d e c r i z a f i n a n c i a r ă î n c a r e s e z b ă t e a b i s e r i c a o r t o d o x ă d i n c a u z a n e s u b v e n ţ i o n ă r i i e i d e c ă t r e s t a t ş i d i n c a u z a n e î n c a s ă r i i s i d o x i e i a d i c ă a impozitului pe ortodoxie"7.

L u c i a P r o t o p o p e s c u e s t e d e p ă r e r e c ă d i n p e t i ţ i a î n a i n t a t ă C u r ţ i i d i n V i e n a p e n t r u r e u n i r e a b i s e r i c i l o r r e i e s e „ c a r a c t e r u l l a i c , e c o n o m i c , s o c i a l ş i n a ţ i o n a l a i a c ţ i u n i i " 8 , i a r D u m i t r u G h i ş e ş i P o m p i l i u T e o d o r s u b l i n i a z ă a s p e c t u l n a ţ i o n a l a l a c ţ i u n i i r o m â n e ş t i , d e o a r e c e „ a c e a s t ă f o r m u l ă a b i s e r i c i i n a ţ i o n a l e l i m i t a p o s i b i l i t a t e a i m p e r i u l u i d e a j o n g l a c u d o u ă i e r a r h i i ş i d e a a n u l a a c ţ i u n i l e r o m â n e ş t i . E s t e p r e z e n t d e s i g u r ş i a c u m î n a c e s t e î m p r e j u r ă r i e x e m p l u l Supplexului, c a r e a a l i n i a t î n t r e a g a g e n e r a ţ i e î n j u r u l u n o r r e p e r e p o l i t i c e n a ţ i o n a l e " 9 . P e a c e l e a ş i c o o r d o n a t e s e s i t u e a z ă ş i M a r i a P r o t a s e , c a r e c o n s i d e r ă c ă l a 1798 „ l u a s e f i i n ţ ă p r i m u l p r o g r a m p o l i t i c î n u r m a f a i m o s u l u i Supplex"10.

D a c ă t o a t e c î t e s - a u f ă g ă d u i t r o m â n i l o r u n i ţ i n u s - a r p u t e a d o b î n d i , m a i v o i e s c e i s ă ţ i n ă u n i r e a s a u s e l e a p ă d ă d e e a " l c ? S e s c r i u l u c r ă r i c a r e î n d e a m n ă i a î m p ă c a r e a u n i ţ i l o r c u n e u n i ţ i i . I n l u m e a s a v a n t ă S a m u i l M i c u , P e t r u M a i o r s e p r o n u n ţ ă p e n t r u a c e a s t a î n l u c r ă r i l e l o r , i a r l a 1787 a p a r e l a V i e n a l u c r a r e a u n u i c a n o n i c d i n O r a d e a : Poslanie sau dreapta oglindă a păcii, aragosta şi uniunii, prin carele cu dreapte dovediri cei uniţi să mintuiésc de hulele carele lor li se aruncă, iară neuniţii nici iritici a fi, nici schismatici, mai ales in neamul românesc, -a nu. se putea aeve zice, să arată2'.

O b s e r v ă m î n c e r c ă r i l e f ă c u t e p e n t r u r e f a c e r e a u n i t ă ţ i i r e l i g i o a s e a r o m â n i l o r . T e n d i n ţ e l e s î n t î n p r i m a j u m ă t a t e a s e c o l u l u i d e n u a n ţ ă p u r r e l i g i o a s ă , r e v e n i r e a i a o s i n g u r ă b i s e r i c ă t r e b u i n d s ă s e f a c ă p r i n r e n u n ţ a r e a ]a a c t u l u n i r i i c u b i s e r i c a R o m e i . î n c e a d e - a d o u a j u m ă t a t e ş i m a i a l e s s p r e s f î r ş i t u l s e c o l u l u i a l X V I I I - l e a , c a d r u l c o n f e s i o n a l e s t e t r e p t a t d e p ă ş i t , a p r o p i e r e a d i n t r e c e l e d o u ă b i s e r i c i f ă -c î n d u - s e d i n i n t e r e s e p o l i t i c e ş i n a ţ i o n a l e . . A c ţ i u n i l e l e g a t e ele m i ş c a r e a Supplexului d o v e d e s c a p r o p i e r e a ş i c o l a b o r a r e a d i n t r e c e l e d o u ă c o n f e s i u n i , a s t f e l î n c î t l a f i n e l e v e a c u l u i n a ţ i u n e a r o m â n ă a p a r e „ c a s o l i d a r ă î n a c ţ i u n e a p o l i t i c ă , n e d i v i z a t ă c o n f e s i o n a l î n m ă s u r ă s ă - ş i m o b i l i z e z e r e s u r s e l e d e c a r e d i s p u n e a , î n s t a r e să r e a l i z e z e o a u t o e x a m i n a r e c o l e c t i v ă ş i o r a p i d ă c o n c e p t u a l i z a r e a d e z i d e r a t e l o r s a l e " 2 5 .

3 . Modelul oferit de lumea europeană. 4. Cauze .ţi implicaţii ideologice. A t m o s f e r a s p i r i t u a l ă a z o n e i c e n t r a l —• s u d e s t e u r o p e n e s e a f l ă î n s e c o l u l a l X V I I I - l e a s u b i n f l u e n ţ a r e f o r m i s m u l u i l u m i n a t p r o m o v a t d e M a r i a T e r e z a , d a r m a i a l e s d e f i u l s ă u l o s i f I I ( n u m i t c o r e g e n t l a 1765) ş i d e c a n c e l a r u l K a u n i t z . E s t e p e r i o a d a u n o r m a r i t r a n s f o r m ă r i ş i m u t a ţ i i î n v i a ţ a s o c i a l - e c o n o m i c ă , a d m i n i s t r a ţ i e , î n v ă ţ ă m î n t , b i s e r i c ă e t c . , e s t e e p o c a î n c a r e î m p ă r ă t e a s a M a r i a T e r e z a , „ î n c i u d a r e p u l s i e i s a l e p e n t r u i d e i l e m o d e r n e . . . ia i n i ţ i a . I va u n e i a c ţ i u n i r e f o r m a t o a r e . I n p o l i t i c a s a s e e x p r i m ă , a ş a d a r , t o a t e t e n d i n ţ e l e c a r e a u a g i t a t A u s t r i a şi a u s c h i m b a t d e s t i n u l s ă u " 3 1 .
