nstructions

Join fabrics for each picture on one long side, 1 cm from edge. Openout and press seam flat.The full size drawings give the compete designs, broken lines indicatehe join of the fabrics.

With right side of fabrics facing and white fabric at the lower edge,race the designs on to fabrics making sure that the broken lines

coincide with the seam lines.Either place the outline diagram centrally underneath the fabric andrace the design through the fabric with the Trick marker or if using

carbon paper transfer the Outline diagram onto fabric first by placinghe dressmakers carbon paper centrally face downwards on the fabrichen place the diagram face up centrally over the top.

Hold carefully in position and finely trace the outlines for the diagramusing a sharpe pointed pencils or tracing wheel.

Work embroidery following appropriate diagram and key to diagram.All parts similar to numbered parts are worked in the same colour andstitch.Where 2 shades are quoted for French Knots work the knots atrandom within the area until it is completely filled.n the Autumn picture the detail on the window panes is added by

working Straight Stitches in 944. Al Straight Stitches are worked lastand superimposed on the embroidery.On completion of embroidery, press lightly on wrong side.To make up, place embroidery centrally over the backing board, foldsurplus fabric to the back and secure at top edge by sticking pins intoedge of board. Pull firmly over lower edge and secure in the same way.Repeat on side edges pulling fabric until it lies taut on the board.Secure at back by lacing from side to side both ways with a strongthread. Remove pins and frame as desired.Diagram 2. Straight Stitch. This is shown as single spaced stitches

worked either in a regular or irregular manner. Sometimes thestitches are of varying size. The stitches should be neither too long nortoo loose.

Diagram 3. Satin Stitch. Proceed with Straight Stitches workedclosely together across the shape, as shown in the diagram. Care must

be taken to keep a good edge.Diagram 4. Long and Short Stitch. This form of Satin Stitch is sonamed as all the stitches are of varying lengths.. It is often used to filla shape which is too large or too irregular to be covered by Satin Stitch.It is also used to achieve a shaded effect. In the first row the stitchesare alternately long and short and closely follow the outline of theshape. The stitches in the following rows are worked to achieve asmooth appearance.Diagram 5. Back Stitch. Bring the thread through on the stitch line,then take a small backward stitch through the fabric. Brign the needlethrough again a little in front of the first stitch, take another stitch,inserting the needle at the point where it first came through.Diagram 6. French Knots. Bring the thread out at the required

position, hold the thread down with the left thumb and encircle thethread twice with the needle as in Fig 1. still holding the thread firmly,twist the needle back to the starting point and insert it close to wherethe thread first emerged (see arrow). Pull thread through to the backand secure for a single French Knot or pass on to the position of thenext stitch as in Fig 2.
