I.1. THE SCT RANGE

To serve the drinking water needs of urban centers and small communities, where simplicity ofoperation is an absolutely essential parameter, our company has developed a range of:

COMPACT STATION FOR WATER TREATMENT - SCT

These SCT are designed for the production of drinking water from non-brackish, chemical pollution-freesurface waters or borehole waters and they cover a wide and ascending range of capacities from 5 to 50 m

3/h

(1.4 to 13.9 l/s).

These compact plants, based on current technologies, are made with robust equipment which is set to asimple design, thus providing a complete treatment of the water. The process includes coagulation, flocculation,

settling, sand filtration and disinfection.

The standard design provides a basic treated water pump delivering a 2 bar pressure; this, however, may be tailored to suit individual client needs.

The basic range described is designed for semi-automatic operation, but can be adapted, upon request,to become:

•  Entirely manual   - in this case, the selector switches of the pump motors will be of the "on-off" type(instead of "auto-off-manual") and the control of clarifier sludge draw-off valves will be manual (insteadof electrical).

•  Fully automated (Automation of backwashing filters)

The dimensions of these units have been carefully chosen to conform to international quality standards andnorms and they are readily transportable by land or sea by using:

•  ISO 20 or 40 ft containers

•  Outside: dimensions satisfy to international transportation standards.

I.2. FEATURES

I.2.1. FLEXIBLE OPERATION

The installations may be operated intermittently. The basic "semi-automatic" range is designed to start or stopautomatically according to water demand.

It is possible to put there an automatic sludge draw-off system.

A maximum week of field training will enable most water treatment operators to easily tend to the operation andmaintenance of the installation.

With an operator input of only 1 to 2 hours a day - for the purposes of preparing the chemicals, filter washingand planned maintenance - the units are very labor efficient.

Standardization permits the exchange of equipment, if need be, between different installations, thus reducingthe stock of spare parts.

1.2.2. INCREASABLE CAPACITY

An increase in capacity can be easily obtained with additional units.

1.2.3. LOW POWER REQUIREMENT

Where electricity is not readily available, a small power generator (optional) is sufficient to run the units.

I.2.4. CHEMICALS

The recommended chemicals have been chosen for their low cost and ready availability:

•  Aluminum sulphate,

•  Sodium carbonate or lime,

•  Calcium or sodium hypochlorite.

I.2.5. CIVIL ENGINEERING

All that the process of installing the S.C.T. requires is a firm foundation and a sewer-connection.

Nevertheless, we recommend the construction of a shelter over the installation to protect the equipment from

the sun and inclement weather.

Our plants are made of various equipment containing some fragile components:

•  Plastic (lamellar plates, pipes ….),

•  Rubber (seals…),

•  Electrical material (electrical cabinet, relays, motors…..).

To keep the equipment in good condition, the ambient temperature must be between 5° C (minimum)and 40° C (maximum): housing in a light structure protecting against atmospheric conditions isrecommended.

I.2.6. SKID-MOUNTING

The quality and reliability of the installations are ensured through shop manufacturing, inspection, hydraulic and

electrical testing before shipment.

I.2.7. ON-SITE INSTALLATION

Skid-mounting enables a rapid site set-up with a simple hydraulic and electrical connecting. In addition, thisdesign ensures that the plant is portable allowing easy relocation if required.

I.3. OPERATORS' BUILDING

We recommend the construction of an operators building comprising two main parts:

A room for storage of spare parts and small tools for planned maintenance and chemical storage.

•  A laboratory-office.

II.1. FIRST TREATMENT STAGE

Water usually contains fine, colloidal suspended matter which must be gathered into a bulky heavier

floc to allow settling to take place.

It includes:

•  Coagulation:  the interfaces of colloids are electrically charged, which prevents particles from comingtogether; coagulation eliminates the charge, thus allowing the colloids to come together to form aprecipitate.

•  Flocculation: intended to increase the volume and cohesion of the floc formed by coagulation.

II.1.1. COAGULATION

A metal salt such as aluminium sulphate is used at a dosage rate that is dependant on the characteristics of thewater to be treated, namely:

•  The water's colloid content, particularly matter of vegetable origin,•  The nature of organic matter in the water,

•  The pH of the water.

The dosage rate is determined during start-up and is adjusted during operation according to flocculation testresults.

The aluminium sulphate, which is a strong acid salt lowers the pH and may render the water aggressive. It maythen be necessary to adjust the pH using lime or sodium carbonate.

II.1.2. FLOCCULATION

Flocculation is promoted by homogeneous, slow and mechanical mixing that increases the chances of collisionof discharged colloidal particles without breaking up the floc.

•  The tank, mixing system and ancillary equipment are designed with the aim of:

•  Preventing still zones (e.g. bottom deposits),

•  Recovering the dissipated energy as turbulence,

•  Preventing preferential paths between tank inlet and outlet.

The unit comprises a static coagulator and a flocculator fitted with a slow-speed mixer.

II.2. SECOND TREATMENT STAGE

Settling: Separation of the previously formed floc.

The transfer of water between the flocculation zone and the settling zone is made by a stilling chamber locatedunder the lamellar modules.

Inclined plates (lamellar modules) forming hexagonal or rectangular cells promote settling while making itpossible to reduce the surface area of the structure.

The floc forms a sludge that is stored in the lower part of the settling tank and is extracted at regular intervals.

The clarified water is collected by overflow and then pumped to the multimedia filters.

The unit includes:•  Lamellar clarifier able to handle variable raw water quality,

•  A clarified water reservoir located at the outlet of the settling tank,

•  A clarified water pump (pumping group).

II.3. THIRD TREATMENT STAGE

Filtration: Filtration is designed to remove any suspended solids and any pollutants left in the clarified water.

Suspended solids gradually block the interstices of the filtering media. This phenomenon is known as "filterclogging". As clogging increases, the head loss across the filter also increases, to a point where the filterrequires backwashing.

We have chosen pressure media filters which can be fully automated (optional). They contain a filter media(sand and/or active carbon) placed on a metal floor fitted with screwed-in nozzles.

Backwashing is carried out with filtered water taken from the filter in service (in front filter). This filters allows ashort backwashing (aprox.60 minute) and avoid a necessity of using a tank with clear water and supplementarypump for backwashing process.

These filters feature the following:•  Easy operation,

•  Totally safe operation,

•  Flow instant wash water flow rate,

•  Limited wash water requirements (savings on treated water).

The filter outlet pressure, approx. 2 bar, makes it possible to supply a reservoir.

II.4. FOURTH TREATMENT STAGE

Disinfection: Removal of harmful micro-organisms.

All water whether or not it has undergone prior treatment, is contaminated by microbes detrimental to health.

It is therefore necessary to disinfect of the water entering the distribution network.

Depending on its availability, the disinfection agent will be:

•  Calcium or sodium hypochlorite

•  Chlorine gas

Treated water flow controlled dosing equipment.

II.5. METERING

A direct-reading instantaneous flow measure is provided to check the correct running of the installation (withanalog converter).

III.1. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WATER TO BE TREATED

The plant is designed for non-brackish, chemical pollution-free surface water and bore hole water, having a SS*less than or equal to 500 mg/l. (*SS = Suspended Solids).

The plant can treat raw water with an SS content higher than 500 mg/l but with a reduced throughput.

If the raw water SS content is greater than 2000 mg/l, it is advisable to stop production to avoid the clogging ofthe installation.

A water analysis will be necessary in order to check its treatability.

III.2. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TREATED WATER

The produced water is a drinking water in accordance with the WHO directives for the quality of drinking water.

III.3. PERFORMANCE LEVELS

Estimated quantity of chemicals used:

•  Lime or sodium carbonate: 30 ppm

IV.1. TREATMENT STAGES

The treatment unit includes the following stages:1. Coagulation.

2. Flocculation.3. Clarification.4. Filtration.5. Disinfection.

1st stage:The raw water is admitted into the coagulation chamber where aluminium sulphate is dosed.

2nd stage:The flow enters the flocculation chamber where the lime or sodium carbonate is dosed.

3rd stage:The flow enters the lamellar clarifier where water-sludge separation takes place.

The sludge is collected in the lower chamber and is discharged to sewer at regular intervals.

Settled water is admitted in the storage chamber which is used as a buffer tank for the process pump.

4th stage:The clarified water is pumped to the pressure filters, where it flows from top to bottom, before flowing tothe treated water tank after addition of calcium hypochlorite for disinfection.

IV.2. STANDARD MODE OF OPERATION

IV.2.1. SEMI-AUTOMATIC OPERATION (NORMAL RUNING)

Standard installation is semi-automatic model, which contains only the filter with automatic washing sequencesand automatic chemicals dosing.

On the front panel of the electrical switchboard, the selector switches of the equipment are placed on the"Automatic" position.

From a 'treated water reservoir low water level' signal) the unit starts up automatically.

The clarified water pump starts and delivers a signal to interlock the raw water pump (not provided).

Dosing pumps for aluminum sulphate and disinfectant are initiated by the starting of the water pumps (raw and

settled water).

A lack of disinfection causes the installation to stop automatically and sets off an alarm signal.

Low level contacts in the disinfectant and chemical tanks control the running of the pumps.

Clarifier sludge draw-off is manual. This operation can be automated by electrical valves initiated by anadjustable rate-duration device (optional).

When the head loss across the filter battery reaches 0.35 bar, all filters should be washed in succession. Thehead loss is monitored from the manometers located at the inlet and the outlet of the filters (optional). Forstandard installation the backwash depends on the “TIME” and started at the selected hour (only one backwashper day).

Filter washing will be carried out by filtered water returned from the operating filter.
