Design a water filtration device for an emergency flood scenario. This device would need to provide clean water from a tainted water source.

Project Brief

15 week solo project. Brand Identity, sketching, research and development, and 3-D modeling

Page 5: B_Arzate Portfolio.2

Floods are a threat world wide. While water is abundant in thesescenarios, it is non-potable, and will result in serious illness if ingested from a tainted source. There are three methods for water purification that are supported by FEMA: Chlorine, Distillation, and Boiling. The solution: The Biolight Boiler. A compact water collection and Boiling system.

Page 6: B_Arzate Portfolio.2

Flood waters can carry a wide range of diseases, ie Giardia, E. Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Tetanus.

Bottled water is in demand when a flood hits and water supplies are contaminated. People are hesitant to purchase emergency kits, even if they have been affected by a natural disaster.

Living soil: Make composting efficient, easy and informative for all comminuty garden members. This was a team project with Cale Kaufman.

Project Brief

15 week team project. Brand Identity, sketching, research and development, and modeling making.

Page 12: B_Arzate Portfolio.2

Community Gardens are a great way for people to connect. Many of these gardens are run by a singular person who ends up with too much responsibility. Composting is time consuming and is rarely monitored correctly. The solution: COM: a heat & moisture monitoring system integrated into a pitchfork; that allows users to better monitor their compost and communicate with each other via an app.

A compost pile can fully decompose in as little as 18 days, or as long as 2 years

<130° 130-160°F >180°

OPTIMAL

Optimal Relative Humidity >90%

Lack of communication leads to uncertainty of communal responsibilities

Majority of garden members are unaware of proper composting techniques and their benefits

Current compost monitoring methods are unused and ignored

Optimal Moisture Content 40-60%

Tom Richard• Director, Penn State Institutes of

Energy and the Environment• Professor of Agricultural and

Biological Engineering• Author of various papers on

composting practices

Insights• “Everything biodegrades if you give it enough

time.”• “It is not possible to tailor your compost to a

specific time line.”• “There are only two things that you need to

monitor in order to maintain a healthy and efficient compost pile: Heat & Moisture.”

Research | Community Gardens

JackieMaster Gardener

Oceanside Community Garden

• Shovels and pitchforks used to turn compost piles

• Money for new tools comes from yearly plot fees ($60/yr)

• Theft of tools is not an issue

• Jackie is the only member who manages the compost pile• No monitoring of the

pile• Interested in easier

maintenance of pile

ValeriaGardener

Emeryville Public Garden• Waited years to get a

plot• $25/month for plot• Gardens at home• Doesn’t bring food

scraps for compost bins• Plants year round• All members are

required to interact with the compost in order to use it

• Weekly work days for all members (Sundays)

SamGarden Manager

Emeryville Public Garden• Has managed

public gardens for decades

• Requires members to participate in workdays

• Rotates members for compost scrap cutting

• Maintains the compost pile himself (“doesn’t like too many cooks in the kitchen”)

• “We use the three bin system. We don’t have the space for larger piles”

ElizabethGarden Manager

Peralta Community Garden

• Has managed public gardens for decades

• “I usually am the only one who cares about the compost. I live across the street so I can bring scraps in when every I need to. No one else really brings anything in.”

• “I’d like to be better at composting but I’m not really sure what else I can do on my own.”

Analogue Solutions |

Smart Compost Box with Integrated Aeration System: Tops of aeration system can pop open or close to assist in maintaining proper temp.

Tab System:Assists users with measurement of materials in compost bins. Brown to green ratio is 30:1

Retractable Measurement Stick: Can live in your compost box for quick visual measurements.

Sensor Box: A retractable sensor housed in the compost box lid to monitor heat and moisture.

Page 17: B_Arzate Portfolio.2

Tech solutions |

Sensor Balls: Roving balls that monitor your compost pile using an app.

Compost Laser Gun: Scan your pile to get readings on heat and moisture.

Smart Bin: Wifi sends compost stats to your phone from the sensor in your pile

Smart Bin: Automatically reads your compost as you throw items in.

Address the painpoints surrounding the growing trend of women’s motorcycle camping events.

Kinetic toys are well thought out and engage the user to interact. For this project I created a cube that is not only mathematically a cube, but also able to transition from a solid state to one of motion.

Social Media is connecting riders from around the world. Events like Babes Ride Out, The Dream Roll, and The Fox Run, are popping up around the globe to address the growing number or Women Riders. Riders across the board overpack. The Solution: LNK, a modular pack, designed to carry everything you need, and attach to your bike safely.

Page 22: B_Arzate Portfolio.2

“Attending Babes Ride Out won’t make me a better rider or give me more experience on the road,” Kristen says. “I have to do that for myself. But having this event to look forward to, and having this community built around it, has sped up my learning curve exponentially.” Desert Magazine, 2015

Opportunities |

Riders tend to over pack, which leads to a heavier load.

Bungee cords are the most commonly used tie down, and the most dangerous.
