The Chao Phraya is a major river in Thailand, with its low alluvial plain forming the centre of the country. It flows through Bangkok and then into the Gulf of Thailand. The lower Chao Phraya has undergone several modifications through man-made efforts during the Ayutthaya period. Several shortcut canals were constructed to bypass large meanders in the river, shortening the trip from the capital city to the sea.

Bangkok, Thailand, has an extensive water transport system serving passengers crossing or travelling along the Chao Phraya River as well as certain canals

Much of Bangkok's history has evolved along the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Winding its way through the heart of the city, it continues to play an important part in daily life. Every day you'll see commuters, saffron-robed monks and school children speeding by on fast river taxis, overtaking the heavily laden rice barges making their journey upriver. For the visitor, the river provides a fascinating contrast of the old and the new
