A DELTA (Dallwitz I 980; Dallwitz eral. I 993) l ist of3 95 characters and their states has been crcatedby the authors fbr the Phyllantheae (Bruhl & I{unter unpublished). This was used to score attributesmeasured in selected specimens, together with those measured in all available material.

Fresh material was uscd rvhcrc possiblc, but in most instances floral measurcments were bascd onre-hydrated material. Mature leaves only rvere used tbr scoring leafcharactcrs.

Terminologt. For purposes of consistency across the members of the Phyllantheae. the pcrianthsegments of Pr.),1/.rrlrr-r are refeffed to as sepals. Fuflher developmental investigations need to bccarried out to contirnr this interyretation (Webster pers. comm.).

'l'erm inology fbr seed surf'ace characters fbllows that ofStearn ( 1992). A bordered h ilum is indicatedby a discoloured and often raised region surrounding the hilum. This character is most obvious inP hyllanthtrs.;/uernroiri l l ;. Muell. (see Hunter& Bruhl 1996: Figurc lA, C).

There are somctimes differences between the lcaves ofbranches, ref-erred to as 'branch leaves', andthose on ultimate branchlets referred to as 'branchlet leaves'. Phyllanthoid branching is indicated bya rcduction of the leaf that subtends a branch/branchlet to a scale-i ike structure, as i l lustrated byWebster ( i970). Branch lcavcs cxhibit ing intcrmediate reduction insize, butsti l lclearly laminatc, arere1'erred to as 'reduced'. Conservation status. A RO'I'AP code (Briggs & Leigh 1988) of2EC-Y is suggested. The species is atpresent only known ftom thc type locality.

Etymologt. In refercnce to th€ habit of the whole plant as it projects horizontally from sandstoneoutcrops.

Notes. Phyllanthus cauticald ts ]lnrsual in having elongated fruits and seeds, characte'S of I'lryllanthusin Australia that are otherwise only known from P. exlli.r. Thesc altributes are similar to those scen inSaaropas, however, a floral disk confirms the inclusion of P. cauticolain PnyLllanllrar. The sced ofP. cauticolq is unusual in being bi-colourous, a state not seen in other members of the genus.

Distrihution. This tropical rveed has a sporadic and disjunct distribution within Australia. It is knowntiom Darwin, and Kakadu National Park in the Nofthem Teritory and from the Torres Strait lslands,I 'ownsvil le and Mackay in Queensland.

Notes. Phyllanthus debllls is probably native to tropical Asia (Airy Shaw 1980). Until now P. r/ellllshas not been recognized as occurring in Australia. Most collections of this species have beenmisidentified as /. azarls Schum. Plryllanthus debiliscan be readily distinguished from,P. amarasbythe possession of six sepals rather than five.

Based on herbarium collection s, P. deb i/rs appears to have been introduced into Australia twice. Theearliest known coilection from Australia is the type specimen ofP. ieai, 1886 from Darwin. No morespecimens ofP. debilis appear to have bccn made until 1980, when it was again collected in Darwin.

Distribution. Plryllanthus eutaxioide.r is restricted to the Darwin Rcgion and the Gove Peninsula oftheNorthern Territory.

No/es. Although the rlame P. eutaxiaides is yalid, it seems notto have been used within Australia otherthan in Moore's original designation. Dunlop el. al ( 1995 ) have referred to this species as P. 'Golden

Sands' in the "Flora ofthe Darwin Region". Phylldnthus eutqxioides isvariable and appears to havethree variants: one (e.g. DNA 24813; DNA 24814) has larger stipules and leaves than the type variant,and a disc that is more inflated; another (e. g. DNA 573 1; DNA 944O:M8L226369) differs from the typevariant in being papi llose to scabrous on the stem s and leaves. In both these variants the antherfilamentsare not fully fused, whife they are in the type variant. For illustrations ofP. eutaxioides see Dunlopet. dl. (1995)lasP. 'GoldenSands']. Furtherstudies ofthis complex are warranted.

Notes. Phyllanthus urinuria, a pan-tropical species, is morphologically similar to ,/'. sulcalus, and

can, however, be d istinguished by branch let, fru it and seed characters (' l 'able I ). Dunlop et o1. ( I 995 )have presented a description referable to P. sulcalLrs as P. /eai, which is a synonym of P dehilis (see

discussion above). Phyllanthus sulcalus and P. urinaria are the only 1wo Australian species of
