Would you want to discover Cluj-Napoca?

I think that Romania is a very beautiful country with a big touristic potential but unfortunately

people responsible with this domain do not see its importance in the economy.

I chose to promote Cluj because I think it is a region that deserves to be discovered. From my

point of view, this town represents an important part of Romanias history through its arhitecture,

istoric monuments, beautiful mountains with virgin forests, and especially through the mixture of

    past and contemporary.

    Geographic position

Cluj-Napoca, located in the central part of Transylvania, has a surface area of 179.5 square

kilometres. The city lies at the confluence of the Apuseni Mountains, the Some plateau and theTransylvanian plain.

The southern part of the city occupies the upper terrace of the northern slope of Feleac Hill, and

is surrounded on three sides by hills or mountains with heights between 500 metres (1,600 ft)

and 700 metres (2,300 ft). The Some plateau is situated to the east, while the northern part of

town includesDealurile Clujului ("the Hills of Cluj"), with the peaks, Lombului (684 m), Dealul

    Melcului (617 m), Techintu (633 m), Hoia (506 m) and Grbu (570 m). Other hills are located

in the western districts, and the hills of Calvaria and Cetuia (Belvedere) are located near the

    centre of city.

    Communities in Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca is the home of approximately 60.000 Hungarians, becoming the second-largest

urban Hungarian community in Romania, after Targu Mures.

In Cluj, Hungarians have a very active cultural and academic life, with a Hungarian state theatre

and opera and Hungarian research institutions. They have also several newspapers and

magazines published in Hungarian language, the community also receiving public and private

    television and radio broadcasts.

Babe-Bolyai University, the biggest university in Romania, has courses in Hungarian language

at which Hungarian students can attend.

    Economy

Cluj-Napoca is an important economic centre in Romania, with famous local brands that have

become well-known at a national and even international level such as: Banca Transilvania,

    Farmec, Jolidon, Ursus Breweries.

Also important is that much of the software and IT activity in Romania is concentrated in Cluj-

Napoca. For example, Nokia invested aproximately 200 million euros in a mobile telephone

factory near Cluj-Napoca in February 2008. In the city exists regional or national headquarters of

MOL, Aegon, Genpact, New Yorker etc.

    Tourism in Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca City Hall has initiated an important project aiming to value the local tourism

potential, intending to set up a tourist office and to identify opportunities for development.

What can we see in Cluj-Napoca?

Cluj-Napoca has a number of landmark buildings and monuments.

Saint Michaels Church Situated in Unirii Square, built at the end of 14th century inthe Gothic style of that period. It was only in the 19th century that the neogothic tower ofthe church was erected. It remains the tallest church tower in Romania to this day( 80m). The altar, built around 1390, is the oldest part of the church. The most recent sectionis the tower, erected in neo-gothic style in 1860. The star-shaped vault, the stained-glass

windows and the sculptures impress with their beauty and grandeur. Repeatedrestorations revealed early 15th century murals. The latest restoration took place between1957 and 1960.

Palace of Justice, built between 1898 and 1902, and designed by architect Gyula Wagnerin an eclectic style. This building is part of an ensemble erected in Avram Iancu Square

that also includes the National Theatre, the Palace of Cile Ferate Romne, the Palace of

the Prefecture, the Palace of Finance and the Palace of the Orthodox Metropolis.

Museum of Mineralogy, the Museum of Paleontology and Stratigraphy, the Museum ofSpeleology, the Botanical Museum and the Zoological Museum.

If we are to talk about the most important tourist attractions in Cluj County, these are the Turzii

Gorges, the Apuseni Mountains, the Vladeasa Massif area, Baita Spa, Gilau region, Tarnita-Belis-Fantanele Lakes, Padis and Cetatile Ponorului, with very beautiful caves. Many of these

places are suitable for paragliding, mountain biking, nautical sports, alpinism and the whole

    range of winter sports.

I am going to expose the most important ones, which attract the biggest number of tourists.

The Turzii Gorges is a natural reserve (on Hdate River) situated 6 km westof Turda and about 15 km south-east of Cluj-Napoca, in Transylvania, Romania. This

canion was formed through the erosion of the calcar of the mountain, is 2 900 mlong and the walls have hights reaching 300 m. The total surface of the canyon is of

324 ha. This contains one of the richest karstic landscape in Romania. More than 1000plants and animal species (some of them rare or endangered, like the wild garlic or some

    species of eagle) live here.

The Apuseni MountainsAre a mountain range in Transylvania, Romania, which belong to the

Western Carpathians, also called Occidentali in Romanian. Their name translates from

Romanian as Mountains "of the sunset". The highest peak is "Cucurbta Mare"

(Hungarian: Nagy-Bihar) - 1849 metres, also called Bihor Peak. The Apuseni Mountains

    have about 400 caves.

The Scarisoara CaveIt is the biggest ice-cave of Romania. It is at 1165 meter height and it is more that 3000

years old. It has a length of 720 meter and a depth of 105 meter. The volume of the ice

we find in the cave is of 75 000 m3 and its width of 15 meter.

The Bears CaveThe cave was so named as it was found to contain numerous complete skeletons of

extinct Cave bears(Ursus spelaeus), a species of large animal which disappeared more

    than 15 000 years ago.

Bear fossils were found in many parts of the cave, most having the marks of bear teeth.

The cave contains an extraordinary range of stalagmite and stalactite formations varying

in size and forms. The cave entrance - at an altitude of 482 m (1,581 ft) - is by the tourist

pavilion. Bear Cave is 1 km (3,300 ft) in length. It is disposed on two-overlapping levels:

the larger part of the cave, 488 m (1,601 ft) in length, has been equipped to allow visits

by tourists, while a temporarily active interior level, 521 m (1,709 ft) in length, is

    reserved for scientific purposes.

I hope this will convince you that our country is beautiful and it deserves to be discovered!
